Guwahati, Jan 04: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, witnessed a substantial surge in passenger traffic, reaching a record 5.6 million in 2023. This notable increase demonstrates a robust growth compared to the previous year’s count of 4.6 million passengers.

Operating as the largest airport in Assam and serving as a central hub for the North-East region of India, the airport managed approximately 2.9 million arrivals and 2.7 million departures throughout the year, highlighting its pivotal role in regional connectivity.

Operated by Adani Airports, the Guwahati International Airport showcased its operational efficiency by efficiently handling the high volume of passenger traffic, even with terminals designed for fewer passengers.

Terminal 1, dedicated to domestic flights, boasts a peak-hour capacity of 500 passengers, while Terminal 2, catering to international flights, can accommodate 125 passengers.

The airport’s overall peak-hour capacity stands at 1300 passengers, with 1000 allocated for domestic and 300 for international flights.

Travellers at Guwahati International Airport enjoy access to six boarding gates at the domestic terminal and one at the international terminal.

The facility is well-equipped with 14 check-in counters, 8 immigration counters, 2 customs counters, and 4 security check booths, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.

The airport recorded an impressive number of aircraft movements, surpassing 46,000 in 2023, with an almost equal distribution between arrival and departure flights.

Notably, on Christmas Eve alone, the airport handled a record-breaking 19,290 passengers, underscoring its growing significance as a vital travel hub.

Anticipating continued growth, the airport is gearing up for the commissioning of a new terminal that will effectively double its current demand capacity. Plans are also in progress to enhance connectivity, with the introduction of new routes to destinations such as Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, and Bangkok.

Discussions are underway for the addition of more domestic and international destinations, further solidifying Guwahati’s role as a key gateway to North-East India.

This substantial increase in passenger traffic not only signifies the operational prowess of the airport but also underscores the escalating prominence of Guwahati as a pivotal entry point to the North-Eastern region of India.
