Guwahati, Feb 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced serious concerns regarding the situation in West Bengal, particularly in the aftermath of the Sandeshkhali incident.

He criticized the treatment of journalists in Bengal, highlighting arrests of those attempting to report the truth.

Sarma described the Sandeshkhali incident as unimaginable, expressing his belief that the law would take its course. He warned that a government committing such atrocities would not last long.

The Calcutta High Court also weighed in on the Sandeshkhali unrest, rebuking the West Bengal government and emphasizing that one person cannot hold an entire population to ransom.

The court condemned the state’s support for absconding Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, accused of sexual assault and land grab by several women.

It declared that if one person could hold the entire population to ransom, the ruling dispensation should not support him.

The court allowed BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s request to visit Sandeshkhali and stated that it would ask Shahjahan Sheikh to surrender.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, granted permission to Adhikari to visit Sandeshkhali while rejecting the appeal of the West Bengal government.

The Bengal government had challenged the order of a single bench that allowed the Leader of the Opposition to visit the area on Monday.

Amid these developments, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, accused the BJP of targeting the Sikh community.

This accusation stemmed from an incident during a BJP march where a turbaned Sikh police officer was allegedly taunted as a “Khalistani.” Mamata Banerjee’s allegations added fuel to the already tense political atmosphere in the state.

The unfolding events in West Bengal, including the Sandeshkhali incident and the subsequent legal and political reactions, have intensified the ongoing political feud between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP.

The implications of these developments on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the overall political landscape of the region remain to be seen.
