Guwahati, June 05: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has once again showcased its excellence in the field of education by securing the 7th rank in the ‘Engineering’ category in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) for 2023.

Additionally, the institute achieved the 9th rank in both the ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ categories, solidifying its position among the top educational institutions in the country.

The NIRF 2023 ranking results were launched by Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Government of India, on June 5, 2023. Singh also commended the significance of rankings and accreditation in evaluating the quality of education offered by higher education institutions.

He expressed his delight at witnessing the positive transformation of the NIRF rankings since its inception in 2015. The rankings have proved to be a valuable tool for students in selecting universities based on their interests and subject domains.

Additionally, the reports have aided institutions in identifying areas for improvement in teaching, research, resources, and other aspects. The NIRF has fostered a culture of data organization and curation among participating institutions, promoting healthy competition at a national and international level.

Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director of IIT Guwahati, extended congratulations to the institute on its commendable performance. He emphasized that IIT Guwahati, as envisioned in the National Education Policy 2020, provides technical education with a multidisciplinary approach, offering holistic development opportunities to its students.

Looking ahead, Iyer highlighted the need to prioritize the lab-to-market proportion of research-focused initiatives. The institute is actively working on enhancing its industry-academia collaborations to work towards the betterment of society.

Currently, IIT Guwahati encompasses eleven departments, nine interdisciplinary academic centers, and five schools covering various engineering, science, healthcare, management, and humanities disciplines. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs to more than 8,000 students. It boasts a residential campus accommodating 435 faculty members.

IIT Guwahati has also garnered recognition on the global stage. The institution has been listed among the top universities in the world for the study of 14 subjects in 2023
edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Notably, the institute’s performance in Petroleum Engineering stood out, ranking 51-100 globally and 2nd in India. Moreover, 21 researchers from IIT Guwahati were selected among the world’s top 2% scientists, as listed by Stanford University, USA, in October 2022.

The institute is actively engaged in cutting-edge research and innovation across various fields, including Genomics, Developmental Biology, Nanotechnology, Healthcare and Bioinformatics, Flexible Electronics, Advanced Functional Materials, Sustainable Polymers, Rural Technologies, Disaster Resilience, and Risk Reduction, AI/ML, and Water Resources and Management.

The NIRF rankings, initiated in 2015, are released annually by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to assess the quality and performance of higher educational institutions in the country. The overall ranking is determined based on parameters such as teaching, learning, resource quality, research, professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach, inclusivity, and peer perception.
