New Delhi, March 30: The Indian Navy successfully rescued 23 Pakistani nationals from a hijacked Iranian fishing vessel in an anti-piracy operation that lasted over 12 hours.

After employing ‘intense coercive tactical measures,’ the Indian Navy managed to secure the vessel and its crew, who were reportedly held captive by nine armed pirates.

The operation, led by INS Sumedha and later assisted by INS Trishul, culminated in the surrender of the pirates and the safe extraction of the crew.

Following the rescue, the hijacked vessel is undergoing sanitization and seaworthiness checks by Indian naval specialists. Once cleared, it will be escorted to a secure location to resume its fishing activities.

The incident occurred approximately 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra, emphasizing the Indian Navy’s proactive stance in safeguarding maritime security in the region.

Admiral R Hari Kumar, the Navy’s Chief, had previously emphasized the importance of maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region under ‘Op Sankalp.’

This operation aims to ensure the safety of seafarers and combat piracy, resulting in the successful rescue of 110 lives, including both Indian and foreign nationals, within 100 days.
