Arunachal marathon

Tawang, Sept 30: Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up to host India’s first high-altitude marathon in Tawang on October 1. This groundbreaking event, a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government, aims to put Tawang on the international marathon map while promoting unity, sportsmanship, and a healthy lifestyle.

Lieutenant General Manish Erry addressed the enthusiastic runners and assured them that all necessary arrangements had been made, including medical facilities due to the high-altitude location. He emphasized that marathons are the fastest-growing sport globally, and everyone is welcome to participate.

This unique marathon will be the first of its kind in the northeastern region of India and is expected to be one of the country’s most challenging. Registration closed on September 18, with participants from 25 states showing overwhelming interest. Notably, the event has over 550 women participants, emphasizing its inclusive nature.

State’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein took X and wrote “Tawang is set to witness an extraordinary event: the 1st ever Mega Marathon at an astounding altitude of 10,000 ft above sea level. This picturesque town is renowned for its natural beauty, serene monasteries and rich cultural heritage and is home to the magnificent Tawang Monastery, the largest monastery in India. The Mega Marathon in Tawang promises to be an unforgettable experience, combining the thrill of a challenging race with the sheer beauty of the Himalayan landscape. I welcome all the participants for a thrilling experience and wish them all the best.”

The marathon offers various categories to test participants’ physical limits, including a full marathon covering 42.195 kilometers, a half marathon of 21.0975 kilometers, and shorter races of 10 or five kilometers. Prize money, up to Rs 75,000, will be awarded to participants in different age groups, including open, defense, and foreign participants.

Beyond offering a unique experience to participants, the event aims to promote sports, a healthy lifestyle, and unity among people from diverse backgrounds.
