New Delhi, April 04: Elon Musk’s X introduces Community Notes to India, offering users a tool to fact-check information on the platform.

Elon Musk has long praised the Community Notes feature on X for ensuring users receive accurate information. Now, this feature is available in India, arriving just as the country gears up for Lok Sabha elections starting on April 19.

X announced the launch of Community Notes in India on social media, welcoming new contributors to join the initiative. Elon Musk himself shared the news, emphasizing the feature’s activation in India.

This grants them access to become contributing members of the feature.

Initially introduced by X in December 2022, Community Notes allow users to view notes associated with posts worldwide, with the ability to post such notes gradually expanding to users in select countries. With the latest expansion, contributors from 69 countries are now part of the program.

Last year, X extended Community Notes to include images and videos, enhancing its utility for fact-checking across different types of content.

The introduction of Community Notes in India is significant, especially with the upcoming national elections, as platforms intensify efforts to combat misinformation. However, X has not made any specific announcements regarding its initiatives for the Indian elections.

While Community Notes have proven valuable in fact-checking, they have faced challenges in curbing misinformation entirely. Despite contributors providing context to stories, the spread of misinformation has persisted on the platform.

X has encountered hurdles in the Indian market, including legal disputes with the government over content regulation.

Earlier this year, X complied with orders to withhold certain accounts and posts related to farmers’ protests in India, citing legal challenges against the blocking orders.

In light of India’s stringent social media regulations, Musk emphasized the platform’s commitment to adhering to local laws during a conversation with BBC last year.
