Gulmarg, Oct 20: Affarwat in Gulmarg received fresh snowfall much to the delight of tourists.

Many parts of Kashmir received their first snowfall of the season on Thursday morning.

Hundreds of tourists staying in Gulmarg and Sonmarg woke up to a couple of inches of snow accumulation around their resorts due to light snowfall, while there was rainfall in other parts of the union territory.

The MeT department, having predicted the rain and snowfall, had said the weather would improve in the “late hours”.

The dip in temperature was welcomed by locals gearing up for winter in warmer clothes. While upper reaches have received their first snow as predicted, the Srinagar MeT department also said “no snow is expected in plains during next 10 days”.

An official said that around 2 inches of fresh snow accumulated at Affarwat, the hill towards the higher reaches of Gulmarg with the precipitation expected to drop in the next 24 hours.

The Meteorological (MeT) office said on Tuesday that light rain is likely during the next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir.

Weather was partly cloudy in the union territory during the last 24 hours. Srinagar had 7, Pahalgam 4.5, and Gulmarg 2.2 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

Mughal road in south Kashmir’s Shopian district also received fresh snowfall along Pir ki Gali (PKG) prompting authorities to close the road connecting Kashmir with the Poonch-Rajouri districts in Jammu region.
