Guwahati, Jan 24: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing serious concerns regarding the security arrangements for the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, particularly focusing on the alleged incidents involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi since the yatra entered Assam.

Kharge’s letter emphasizes a reported “security lapse” during the yatra, with Rahul Gandhi alleging that the Assam Police has either systematically allowed or stood by while BJP workers breached his security cordon, jeopardizing his safety and that of his team.

The letter points out that despite ample evidence available in the public domain, no arrests have been made, and investigations have not been initiated in many instances.

Kharge, in his communication, has requested Amit Shah’s intervention to ensure adequate security measures are in place until the conclusion of the yatra and the associated function in Assam.

Rahul Gandhi’s march reentered Assam from Meghalaya on January 23, facing denial of permission to pass through Guwahati’s city center. Instead, the yatra was directed to take a national highway bypassing the city, leading to protests from Congress workers.

Subsequently, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the filing of a police case against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders for alleged “wanton acts of violence” during the yatra.

Rahul Gandhi countered these allegations, accusing the BJP-led government in Assam of trying to disrupt the yatra due to its growing impact, since its commencement from Manipur.

He also claimed that he was barred from interacting with students at a private university in Meghalaya on the instructions of Amit Shah, further escalating the political tension between the Congress and the BJP in the region.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, covering a distance of 6,713 km and initiated on January 14th, is scheduled to conclude on March 20th in Mumbai.

The yatra has become a focal point for political discourse, with Rahul Gandhi and Himanta Biswa Sarma actively engaging in a war of words through social media and media interactions.
