Kohima, Jan 24: The Nagaland government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, is set to engage in discussions with other northeastern states that share borders with Myanmar to address concerns regarding the Centre’s decision to fence the international border with the neighboring country.

Patton shared this information during a program at the police headquarters.

Responding to questions about the Nagaland government’s stance and its recent meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he mentioned that they plan to consult with other northeastern states along the Indo-Myanmar border before approaching the Centre.

“We will be discussing the matter (fencing the border) with other northeastern states and approach the Centre on the Union government’s decision to seal the Indo-Myanmar border,” Patton stated.

Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma, added that the state government aims to convey its perspectives on managing the border and the free movement regime.

Beyond providing inputs, the state intends to enhance the regulation of the Indo-Myanmar border, considering national security concerns and addressing the sentiments of the local population along the border.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced over the weekend that the Centre has decided to fence the entire India-Myanmar border to curb the free movement of people.

The decision has raised various considerations and discussions, prompting Nagaland and other northeastern states to collaboratively address the implications and potential impacts of such a move.
