Kavaratti, Jan 14: Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep sparking renewed interest in the island chain, the year 2023 has marked the lowest number of aircraft movements since 2015, excluding the pandemic-hit year 2020.

According to data from the Airports Authority of India, the Agatti Island airport in Lakshadweep witnessed the fewest flight movements during the period from April to November 2023, marking an eight-year low.

The recorded aircraft movements during this timeframe amounted to 1,080, in contrast to 1,482 in the same period of 2022 and 1,202 in 2021.

Aircraft movements, representing the total number of landings and take-offs, have followed a consistent pattern in preceding years, with an exception in 2020 due to the global pandemic.

Lakshadweep recently gained prominence following a controversy triggered by inappropriate remarks made by Maldivian ministers regarding Prime Minister Modi’s visit on January 2.

This incident has resulted in heightened attention on the islands, with several Indian celebrities expressing their intentions to vacation in Lakshadweep.
