New Delhi, April 19: Today marks a significant milestone in India’s democratic journey as the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 begins. This pivotal moment underscores the nation’s commitment to democracy, with an unprecedented 969 million registered voters and 102 constituencies spanning 21 states and Union Territories.

In the first phase, voting will take place on all seats in Tamil Nadu (39), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), Meghalaya (2), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Puducherry (1), Sikkim (1) and Lakshadweep (1).

Besides these, there will be voting in 12 seats in Rajasthan, eight in Uttar Pradesh, six in Madhya Pradesh, five seats each in Assam and Maharashtra, four in Bihar, three in West Bengal, two in Manipur, and one seat each in Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura and Chhattisgarh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance is seeking a third successive term at the Centre. The Congress, along with its INDIA bloc allies, will look to stage a comeback at power after major drubbing in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.

    West Bengal recorded the highest voter turnout by 5 pm at 77.57 per cent among the 21 states and Union Territories which went to the polls for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections. Check the full list here:

  • The Electronic Voting Machines in Imphal were sealed in Imphal, Manipur after the polling for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections concluded.
  • 2024 India Elections Live: Voting concludes in Imphal East for Lok Sabha elections. EVMs and VVPATs machines are being sealed. The timing for casting a vote in Manipur was from 7 am to 4 pm.

  • Nagaland minister Temjen Imna Along casts his vote for the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 at a polling station in Alongtaki, Mokokchung.

  • Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, also known as PS Golay, exercised his democratic right by casting his vote at a polling station in Gangtok. He expressed his confidence that his party would secure a significant victory by winning “32 out of 32 Assembly seats.”

Our BLAs were viciously attacked by BJP goons in booth 226 and 227 of Barokodali GP, Alipurduar. Central Forces stood idly by and watched them unleash violence. We have been attracting the EC’s attention to the BJP’s criminal underbelly but alas they refused to act. And now our workers are having to bear the brunt of their inaction!”

  • Till 7 am today, Trinamool Congress has filed 9 complaints with the Election Commission of India mostly related to voting in North Bengal
  • Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, “When I reached the polling station around 6:30 AM, there were around 200 people present at the polling station, which is a good message that people are participating in the voting process enthusiastically…A very good voter turnout can be seen in this election…”
  • Marking the start of Phase 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “The 2024 Lok Sabha elections commence today! As 102 seats across 21 States and UTs go to the polls, I urge all those voting in these seats to exercise their franchise in record numbers. I particularly call upon the young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers. After all, every vote counts and every voice matters!”
