Kolkata, Aug 22: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, urging for stricter anti-rape laws following the outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a government hospital in Kolkata.

The Mamata-led government has come under fire for its handling of the case and the subsequent vandalism at RG Kar Medical College, where the crime occurred.

The Supreme Court, observing the situation, expressed disbelief at the state government’s inability to manage the chaos at the hospital.

Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP and Left parties of instigating the vandalism and attempting to tamper with evidence in the case.

The victim, a trainee doctor, was found raped and murdered in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9.

Following the crime, Mamata Banerjee announced her government’s intention to seek the death penalty for the culprit and warned that the investigation would be handed over to the CBI if police failed to resolve the case by August 18.

However, on August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, citing “serious lapses” in the hospital’s administration and lack of progress in the investigation.

In response, Mamata Banerjee led a massive rally in Kolkata on August 17, demanding justice and capital punishment for the accused, a civic volunteer associated with the police.
