Imphal, March 09: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh provided assurances regarding the phased deportation of Myanmar nationals from the state during discussions on March 9.

Singh emphasized the logistical challenge posed by the large number of individuals involved, necessitating a gradual approach to the deportation process.

In his remarks to the media, CM Biren Singh acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “…The number is huge so we cannot deport them altogether at one time. So part by part we are deporting and there are some legal procedures that we have to follow, we are following them and are deporting them & will continue to deport…”

Regarding the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Singh highlighted that the decision rests with the Central Government.

While the State Assembly passed a resolution in support of the NRC, Singh noted that further action lies within the purview of the Union Ministry.

“The decision has to be taken by the central government. Our Assembly has passed the resolution and recommended but now the rest of the work is in the hands of the Union Ministry so I will make the request and I will follow it,” added the chief minister.

The deportation process commenced on March 8, with seven Myanmar nationals expelled from Imphal International Airport. This marks the beginning of a larger operation targeting the deportation of a total of 77 individuals from Myanmar between March 8 and March 11.

As outlined by the state government’s Home Department, these foreign nationals will be transported in groups via helicopters from Imphal to the border town of Moreh. The initial batch of seven individuals was airlifted from Imphal International Airport to Moreh early on Friday morning.

The Home Department’s directive, issued on March 5, specifies that the deported individuals will be handed over to Myanmar officials at Tummu, situated on the Myanmar side of the international border.

Over the course of four days, these individuals will be deported in stages, with the state government’s Transport Department covering the associated expenses.
