Churachandpur, Sept 23: The Manipur government has taken the significant step of designating the premises within the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Ganpimul, Churachandpur district, as a ‘Temporary Prison’ under Sub-Section (1) of Section 3 of the Prisoners Act, 1994. This decision was officially announced on September 22.

In light of the urgency associated with operationalizing the temporary prison, the Governor of Manipur has appointed the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Churachandpur and the Officer-in-Charge of Churachandpur Police Station as the Superintendent of Jail and Jailor of the temporary prison. This additional responsibility will be carried out alongside their regular duties and assignments, as specified in the official order.

Simultaneously, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has reiterated its demand for the transfer of Kuki-Zo inmates from Imphal prison. This request highlights the broader context of prison management and the need to address the specific concerns surrounding inmate populations.

The establishment of a temporary prison at the BSF’s Subsidiary Training Centre marks a significant development in the state’s efforts to address ongoing law and order challenges. It reflects a proactive approach to ensure the effective management of individuals in custody and maintain the safety and security of the region.
