Imphal, March 11: Chungreng Koren, a mixed martial artist hailing from Manipur, clinched the interim bantamweight championship at the Matrix Fight Night (MFN), dedicating his victory to his strife-torn home state.

In an emotional appeal, Koren urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and restore peace in Manipur, where violent clashes have ravaged communities for nearly a year. He extended an invitation for PM Modi to visit Manipur and witness the turmoil firsthand.

“Violence is happening in Manipur. It has been almost a year, people are dying, and there is food and water shortage in relief camps. The kids are not able to study. The future is unclear. Please visit Manipur once and restore peace in Manipur,” Koren implored.

The undated video capturing Koren’s heartfelt plea surfaced after his victory at MFN, showcasing his concern for the dire situation gripping Manipur.

Ethnic tensions in Manipur, escalating since May of the previous year, have claimed over 200 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 individuals.

The unrest stems from protests against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, sparking violence and discord in the region.

Officials highlight the severity of the situation, emphasizing that the ethnic strife has plunged Manipur into a state of anarchy, with underground militant groups regaining support amidst the chaos.
