Imphal, March 23: Manipur’s cinematic heritage takes center stage at a prestigious global event held in Kolkata, showcasing the state’s rich film legacy.

Among the esteemed participants was the SN Chand Cine Archive & Museum (SNCCAM), established by the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), which shared its expertise in film archiving despite financial constraints.

During the festival, the digitally restored Manipuri film “Ishanou” (1990), jointly restored by the Film Heritage Foundation and MSFDS, was screened, celebrating Manipur’s cinematic legacy alongside Indian classics.

A highlight of the event was an international colloquium exploring film’s role as cultural heritage, where MSFDS presented Manipur’s efforts in preserving its cinematic past, including digitization projects and restoration initiatives.

SNCCAM’s achievements, such as the 4K digitization of “Brojendragee Luhongba” and preservation of reels from “Mainu Pemcha” (1948), were showcased, along with plans to digitize works by MK Priyobarta and Kongbrailatpam Ibohal Sharma.

This spotlight on Manipur’s film preservation underscores its status as the only Indian state with a state-owned film archive and conservation laboratory, dedicated to preserving films for future generations.

Presentations from Prasar Bharati and Kerala film archives also highlighted India’s collective efforts in safeguarding cinematic heritage.
