Howrah, July 21: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Friday in Howrah district, West Bengal, causing significant damage to the area. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported at the time of writing.
The incident occurred in Mangala Haat, a bustling market area known for its wholesale and retail cloth shops. The intensity of the blaze resulted in the gutting of several shops, leading to considerable financial losses estimated to be in several lakhs of rupees.
As of now, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown and is yet to be ascertained by the authorities. Responding to the emergency, Howrah’s Divisional Fire Officer, Ranjan Kumar Ghosh, was present on the scene with 18 fire tender vehicles to combat the inferno. Firefighters have been working diligently to control the blaze and prevent further destruction.
The fire was first reported at approximately 1 am, and due to the presence of a vast quantity of clothes and the combustible materials used in the shop structures, it rapidly spread, engulfing an area of about 5,000 square feet. The market’s proximity to other buildings and shops heightened the panic among the residents and shop owners in the vicinity.
Despite the challenges posed by the rapidly spreading flames, the fire department has been pouring water from all sides to contain the inferno. Howrah Maidan, a significant landmark and heart of the city, witnessed the emergency response, creating a sense of concern and unease among the locals.

Upon receiving the fire alert, the police immediately informed the fire department and 12 fire engines were dispatched to the scene. Subsequently, an additional six fire tender vehicles were mobilized, all working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
As the operation to combat the fire continues, the city police’s Detective and Fire Brigade units have commenced their investigation into the incident. The cause of the fire is a primary focus of their inquiry, which will shed light on the factors that led to the catastrophic blaze.
