Meghalaya cabinet

Shillong, July 21: Meghalaya cabinet has given the green light to a modest hike of 5 paise per litre for diesel prices. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma made the announcement after chairing a cabinet meeting, stating that the move is expected to generate additional revenue of Rs 5-6 crore annually.

Diesel and petrol prices in Meghalaya have been among the lowest in the country, making the 5 paise increase a measured step to enhance revenue without imposing a significant burden on consumers. The government aims to strike a balance between meeting financial requirements and considering the impact on citizens.

Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the importance of fiscal stability and generating sufficient funds to support various developmental projects and public welfare initiatives. The modest diesel price hike is viewed as a pragmatic measure to achieve these objectives without causing undue hardship to the people.

The decision to implement a minimal increase in diesel prices comes in the context of emerging economic challenges and the need to maintain a steady flow of revenue for the state. By raising the cost of diesel by a marginal amount, the government aims to secure additional funds to meet essential expenditures and finance critical infrastructure projects.

The move has garnered both support and concerns from various quarters. While some view it as a necessary step to boost revenue and ensure sustainable development, others are wary of potential effects on transportation costs and the overall cost of living for citizens. However, Chief Minister Sangma assured the public that the increase is minimal and has been carefully deliberated upon to minimize any adverse impact on the people.

Amidst economic considerations, the Meghalaya government continues its efforts to address the longstanding issue of insurgency in the state. In this regard, the Chief Minister stated that the government is engaging with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) with an open mind to explore peaceful and constitutional means to find a resolution to the matter.

The government is committed to seeking a sustainable solution that upholds peace, security, and the interests of all stakeholders.

In addition to the diesel price hike, the cabinet also approved a proposal put forth by the tourism department. The proposal entails the acquisition of 50 acres of land near the picturesque Nongmahir Lake in Ri-Bhoi district, estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.

This move seeks to tap into the area’s vast tourism potential and promote sustainable tourism activities. With the acquisition of the land, the government will be better equipped to undertake tourism projects and enhance the overall tourism experience in the region.

The decision to reduce the time frame for petrol pump owners to submit Value Added Tax (VAT) from 100 days to 30 days is another noteworthy move by the cabinet. This measure aims to streamline tax collection processes and ensure timely remittance of VAT, facilitating smoother governance and financial operations.

As the government embarks on these measures to enhance revenue and bolster economic prospects, it remains committed to fostering inclusive growth and development across the state. Striking a balance between economic growth and citizen welfare will continue to be a key priority for the Meghalaya government. By implementing prudent policies and engaging in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, the government endeavors to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the people of Meghalaya.
