Aizawl, Dec 01: The outcome of the Mizoram Assembly election is eagerly anticipated, with exit polls suggesting a potential sweep by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), led by Lalduhoma, the 74-year-old former IPS officer. If the predictions hold, Lalduhoma could emerge as the next Chief Minister of Mizoram when the results are declared on December 3.

The political landscape of Mizoram witnessed a dynamic contest on November 7, featuring various parties, including the BJP, its ally the Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Congress. Lalduhoma’s Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) added a distinctive dimension to the electoral battle, aiming for victory in 28 to 35 seats out of the 40-member house.

Born on February 22, 1949, Lalduhoma’s political journey began as an IPS officer, reaching a milestone in 1984 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha. Despite facing disqualification under the anti-defection law, Lalduhoma continued to leave an indelible mark on Mizoram’s political canvas.

In his IPS career, Lalduhoma served as a squad leader in Goa, leading crackdowns on hippies and smugglers. His accomplishments led to his transfer to New Delhi in 1982, where he served as the security in-charge of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

As the founder and president of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Lalduhoma played a pivotal role in shaping Mizoram’s political landscape. In the 2018 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election, he was the first chief ministerial candidate of the ZNP-led ZPM coalition.

Lalduhoma’s political journey faced challenges, including disqualification as an MLA in 2020 for violating the anti-defection law. Undeterred, he rebounded, winning re-election from Serchhip in a by-election in 2021.

With the 2023 Assembly Polls results on the horizon, Lalduhoma, a formidable contender and the founder-president of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), is poised to play a significant role in Mizoram’s unfolding political narrative.
