Shillong, Sep 13: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal announced that plans are underway to establish an alternative route for vehicles traveling to Shillong, bypassing the Umiam dam.

This decision follows recent safety concerns related to the dam, which recently completed retrofitting construction work.

Mondal informed reporters that the department has sought assistance from Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar to address the issue.

He assured that efforts are being made to find a solution that will benefit commuters.

The minister also clarified that heavy vehicles will not be permitted to cross the Umiam dam bridge to ensure its safety.
