Shillong, Feb 08: The government of Meghalaya has proposed a groundbreaking budget of over Rs 2,500 crore for the construction of a new administrative city near Shillong, marking a significant stride in state development.

Led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the initiative aims to consolidate administrative functions into a single centralized location, enhancing public service accessibility.

The proposed administrative city is slated to be built in Mawdiangdiang, approximately 12 kilometres from Shillong’s city centre, encompassing not only administrative buildings but also vital infrastructure like road connectivity and water supply.

Chief Minister Sangma has meticulously reviewed the city’s designs and plans to seek approval from the state cabinet. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are set to be finalized by the end of the second quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, paving the way for the tender process for construction.

Additionally, Rs 100 crore has been allocated for constructing three roads leading to the city, with work expected to commence soon.

This strategic initiative aligns with a broader development agenda for Shillong, prioritizing comprehensive, long-term solutions over fragmented approaches.

The new administrative city is poised to be a significant catalyst in this vision, bringing together diverse government services in one convenient locale for the benefit of the populace.
