Minicoy Islands

1. A new airport planned in Lakshadweep’s Minicoy Islands for military and civilian use.
2. Dual-purpose airfield to handle fighter jets, military planes, and commercial aircraft.
3. Tourism boost expected after increased interest following PM Narendra Modi’s visit.

Minicoy, Jan 09: India is set to develop a new airport at Minicoy Islands in Lakshadweep, aiming to operate both military and civilian aircraft, following the surge in tourist interest after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the Union Territory.

The government envisions a dual-purpose airfield capable of handling fighter jets, other military planes, and commercial aircraft. The proposal, previously introduced and now resurrected, emphasizes joint-use functionality.

This strategic move holds significance as the airfield can serve as a base for monitoring the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean region, crucial for addressing piracy and escalating anti-social activities.

The Indian Coast Guard initially proposed the development of an airstrip in Minicoy Islands, and the current proposal places the Indian Air Force in charge of operations.

In addition to enhancing surveillance capabilities in the Arabian Sea, the Minicoy airport will contribute to the region’s tourism boost, aligning with the government’s development plans.

Presently, Lakshadweep has only one airstrip at Agatti, limited to narrow-body aircraft. The revival of proposals for a new airport and expanding existing facilities aligns with the recent attention and attraction the islands received after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

During his trip, he announced various development projects and actively participated in snorkeling activities, drawing attention to the island’s tourism potential.
