Imphal, May 31: A total of 188,143 people have been affected by floods in Manipur following incessant rainfall in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, a state minister announced on Thursday.

The minister added that the floods had damaged at least 24,265 houses in the past few days.

Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management, Awangbou Newmai, reported that 18,103 people have been evacuated, and 56 relief camps have been established.

In a Facebook post, Newmai stated, “Held a brief meeting with Additional Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner Imphal West & East, Directorate Relief and Disaster Management to review the flood situation, and strategizing for immediate action on relief, search and rescue operations.”

He also noted that approximately 401 hectares of crops have been affected.

Relief materials have been distributed to Imphal East, Imphal West, Bisnupur, Noney, Churachandpur, Senapati, and Kakching, according to the minister.

Newmai reported that three people have died, nine have been injured, and one person is missing due to the floods that began on May 29.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh mentioned on social media that there were breaches in river embankments at 18 locations, 17 of which have been sealed. “Flooding in the surrounding areas has been successfully brought under control,” he said.

The northeastern state has experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms triggered by the cyclone in recent days.

Due to severe flooding caused by breaches in embankments along riverbanks, the government declared a two-day public holiday for all state offices from Thursday until May 31.

Citizens have been urged to stay indoors unless faced with an emergency, according to an official notification.
