Lalduhoma, who recently took oath as the chief minister, expressed his commitment to ensuring the active involvement of all stakeholders in the committee. Addressing reporters, he reiterated that protecting the state’s borders is a top priority for his government.

To resolve the longstanding border dispute between Mizoram and Assam, Lalduhoma expressed his intention to meet with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally. This diplomatic approach aligns with ongoing efforts to peacefully resolve the Assam-Mizoram border clash under the new ZPM government.

While Mizoram faces negligible border disputes with Manipur and Tripura, the state has encountered a persistent issue with Assam over the years. The border dispute, rooted in colonial demarcations from 1875 and 1933, has remained unresolved.

Mizoram claims a portion of the inner line reserved forest, while Assam adheres to the Survey of India’s 1933 map as its constitutional boundary.

The border tensions escalated on July 26, 2021, resulting in a tragic exchange of fire between police forces from both states, leading to casualties and injuries. Since August 2021, Mizoram and Assam have engaged in three ministerial-level talks and several virtual meetings to find a resolution.

Previous meetings between former Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi aimed to seek an amicable solution to the ongoing border dispute. The establishment of the boundary committee signifies Mizoram’s commitment to addressing these complex border issues diplomatically and collaboratively.
