Island of Peace

Aizawl, Sept 07: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, addressing the Mizo Students’ Union general conference in Thenzawl town, proudly declared that Mizoram stands as an island of peace amidst a sea of turmoil.

The former rebel leader turned politician highlighted the state’s role in providing a safe and peaceful refuge to those fleeing political unrest in neighboring regions, including Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur.

Zoramthanga’s personal experiences during his underground days, when he sought refuge in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) along with leaders of the then-outlawed Mizo National Front (MNF), gave him a profound appreciation for the value of finding sanctuary in a peaceful place. He drew parallels between his own past and the current situation, expressing empathy for those who have found solace in Mizoram.

“I have experienced the relief of having a sound sleep even for one night in the then East Pakistan after fleeing political disturbances in Mizoram. I can sense the joy of our brethren from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur as they find solace in Mizoram, where they can sleep soundly and carry on with their daily lives without fear,” said Zoramthanga, who also serves as the president of the ruling MNF.

He stressed the importance of cherishing the value of peace and underscored that Mizoram has earned its reputation as one of the most peaceful states globally, despite enduring past disturbances. The Chief Minister noted that neighboring regions plagued by insurgency often turned to Mizoram in search of lasting peace, seeking assistance in mediating peace between their governments and insurgent groups.

Zoramthanga commended the collective efforts of the state government, the people of Mizoram, and various organizations in offering support to their ethnic brothers and sisters. He emphasized the need to stand up for the rights of the Zo kindreds and maintain a firm stance.

Acknowledging the role of Mizo students in supporting their ethnic brethren in neighboring states and countries, Zoramthanga expressed gratitude for their fearless efforts during the tumultuous Mizoram insurgency period. He encouraged the current generation to follow in the footsteps of these pioneers and remain committed to the well-being of Mizoram and its people.

During the conference, a group known as the ‘Ladies Organisation’ honored Chief Minister Zoramthanga by presenting him with a citation in recognition of Mizoram’s humanitarian role in providing shelter to Myanmar refugees. This act of acknowledgment further underscores Mizoram’s commitment to extending a helping hand to those in need during challenging times.

Mizoram’s journey from a region marked by insurgency to becoming a sanctuary of peace is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people and leadership. Chief Minister Zoramthanga’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and cherishing this hard-earned peace while continuing to offer support and refuge to those seeking it. In a world often marred by conflict, Mizoram’s commitment to peace sets a commendable example for all.
