Aizawl, Feb 29: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Thursday that his government would refrain from collecting biometric data of refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The decision comes amidst assistance provided by the Centre to address the needs of these refugees and internally displaced people (IDP) from Manipur, who have sought shelter in Mizoram.

Lalduhoma disclosed in the assembly that although the Ministry of Home Affairs had initially instructed the state government to collect biometric data of refugees in April last year, his administration decided against it in September due to various reasons, including the upcoming state assembly elections.

The chief minister assured that no refugees would face deportation until peace is restored in their respective countries, a commitment he received from the Union Home Minister during a meeting in January.

Furthermore, Lalduhoma highlighted that the state government is extending assistance to refugees and IDPs with its resources, complemented by financial aid from the Centre.

Statistics provided by the state Home Department indicate that over 32,000 Myanmar nationals are currently sheltered in various parts of Mizoram, with the Champhai district hosting the highest number.

Additionally, more than 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals and over 9,000 internally displaced people from Mizoram are also seeking refuge in the state.

The influx of refugees from Myanmar began in February 2021 following political unrest, while Bangladeshi nationals sought refuge after military operations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in November 2022.

The Kuki-Zo people from Manipur also sought shelter in Mizoram due to ethnic violence with the majority Meitei community since May last year.

These communities share ethnic ties with the Mizos, fostering solidarity amidst their plight.
