Aizawl, Nov 09: Re-poll will be held in Muallungthu polling station under Aizawl South-3 assembly constitution on Friday as instructed by the Election Commission of India, Mizoram election department officials said on Wednesday evening.
The officials said that though the polling on Tuesday was completely peaceful the whole day, there have been instances of glitches in the functioning of EVMs and VVPATS in a number of polling stations across the state. There are 1,276 polling stations in 40 assembly constituencies.
“It was alleged that before the polling officially began, the polling officials at the Muallungthu polling station conducted a mock poll on Tuesday early morning. The complaint was that the votes polled during the mock poll were not cleared or deleted and continued the polling with votes cast in the mock poll recorded in the EVM,” the officials said.

The Returning Officer (RO) of the polling station, in consultation with the Observer decided to take up the matter with the central poll panel. The ECI, in accordance with sub-Section (2) of Section 58 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, cancelled the voting at Muallungthu polling station.
“A re-poll in the polling station was allowed by the ECI in accordance with chapter 13 of Hand Book for Returning Officer, 2023 by the central poll panel,” the officials said.
Re-poll will be held on Friday from 7 AM in the morning till 4 PM on Friday and the ‘silent period’ for the Muallungthu polling station commences from 4 PM on Wednesday.
The state election department officials informed the political parties, candidates and political party workers that while they should be prepared for the re-poll, canvassing in any method is not allowed from 4 PM on Wednesday.
