Kohima, Dec 03: Wangpang Konyak, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party’s (NDPP) candidate, secured victory in the by-elections for the Tapi Assembly seat in Nagaland. The bypoll was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of NDPP MLA Noke Wangnao in August of this year.

The electoral contest in Nagaland saw a relatively smooth path for the ruling NDPP, as Wangpang Konyak claimed a substantial lead of 5,333 votes over the Congress candidate, Wanglem Konyak. The by-elections for the Tapi seat unfolded on November 7, involving 23 polling booths. Wangpang Konyak successfully navigated the electoral landscape, with Congress trailing behind in the race.

Counting of votes commenced at 8 am on Sunday, marking the conclusion of the electoral process for the Tapi Assembly seat in Nagaland’s Mon district. Despite facing challenges, such as seven vulnerable and six critical polling stations, the by-election recorded an impressive voter turnout of 96.25 percent.

A total of 15,256 voters, including 7,468 women, were eligible to participate in the electoral process for the Tapi seat in Nagaland.

Wangpang Konyak’s victory not only solidifies the NDPP’s hold on the Tapi Assembly seat but also reflects the electorate’s response to the ruling party’s leadership in the aftermath of Noke Wangnao’s demise. The by-election results underscore the prevailing political dynamics in Nagaland and highlight the continued influence of the NDPP in the region.
