Konyak candidate

Kohima, Oct 18: The Congress party has officially named Wanglem Konyak as its candidate for the upcoming 43 Tapi by-polls, scheduled to take place on November 7.

Wanglem Konyak recently made the decision to join the Congress party. In the 2023 State Assembly elections, he ran as a candidate from the Naga People’s Front (NPF) but narrowly lost to Late Noke Wangnao, with a margin of just 82 votes. At the time, Wangnao held the position of advisor for Social Welfare to the Government of Nagaland.

The 43 Tapi Assembly Constituency became vacant following the unfortunate passing of Noke Wangnao on August 28, 2023.

The forthcoming 43 Tapi by-polls will witness a contest between the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the Congress.

Wanglem Konyak expressed his readiness for the by-polls, citing his extensive grassroots work. He also conveyed his strong belief in the people’s support, saying, “I will be contesting as a Congress candidate in the 43 Tapi by-polls. I am well prepared for the by-polls as I have worked on the grassroots level. I have full confidence in my people.”

When questioned about his switch from the NPF to the Congress, he clarified, “I joined the Congress party because it’s the party that can bring about the change people desire.”

Regarding the clash between the NDPP and the Congress in the by-polls, Konyak emphasized that it transcends political affiliations, stating, “It is not about ruling or the opposition party. Rather, it revolves around the aspirations of the common people. They want me to get elected.”

The ticket distribution for the by-polls is scheduled to take place at the Congress Bhavan in Kohima on Wednesday.
