Nagaland Kargil

Kohima, Oct 01: Nagaland is set to host the annual football tournament in memory of its Kargil martyr, Captain N. Kenguruse, who was posthumously honored with the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC). The tournament, known as the Late Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse MVC Memorial Football Tournament, is scheduled to take place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima from November 1 to November 9.

The announcement was made during the unveiling of the tournament’s poster at the Kohima Science College, Jotsoma. Major General Vikas Lakhera, IGAR (North), had the honor of unveiling the poster as the chief guest for the event.

Addressing the gathering, Major General Vikas Lakhera began by expressing his deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by Captain Kenguruse during the Kargil War. He emphasized that within the armed forces, individuals honored with the Maha Vir Chakra are regarded as the bravest among the brave.

Captain Kenguruse’s actions in adapting to harsh weather conditions during Operation Vijay, including scaling a cliff face and engaging in combat with the enemy, are a testament to his exceptional courage.

Football holds a special place in the hearts of the Nagas, and Major General Lakhera acknowledged its immense popularity in the region. He emphasized that local players possess the potential to excel not just within the state but also on the national and international stages, provided they have access to proper infrastructure and facilities.

Major General Lakhera highlighted the inherent fairness in football, where the spirit of participation often outweighs the significance of victory or defeat. He encouraged local players to aspire to achieve success at both the national and international levels.

Lakhera delivered a powerful message to the students, teachers, and the Kargil martyr’s family in attendance. He stressed the importance of honesty and dedicated service to others, likening individuals in all fields to soldiers in their respective domains. Lakhera urged everyone to strive to serve and safeguard others to the best of their abilities.

He also commended Kohima Science College for producing not only brave individuals like Captain Kenguruse but also numerous Naga leaders across various fields.

The Late Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse MVC Memorial Football Tournament was initiated in 2015 by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles under ‘Operation Sadhbhawana’ as a tribute to the brave martyr who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War in 1999.

This tournament serves as a platform for football teams from all districts of Nagaland to showcase their talent while vying for the prestigious title of ‘Best amongst Equals.’ The victorious team will be awarded the coveted rolling trophy and cash prizes totalling Rs 4,25,000.

The tournament at the Indira Gandhi Stadium will also feature performances by renowned Nagaland singers Mengu Suokhrie and Moko Koza, adding a cultural touch to this heartfelt tribute to a national hero.
