Imphal, June 12: Leaders of Congress and other opposition parties have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heed RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s advice and visit Manipur, which has been experiencing violence for over a year.

This call comes after Bhagwat emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation in the strife-torn state.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh suggested that Bhagwat might influence the Prime Minister, a former RSS member, to visit the northeastern state.

Independent MP Kapil Sibal noted that while it may not be in Modi’s nature to follow the opposition’s advice, he should listen to Bhagwat.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav criticized Bhagwat for his delayed response and accused the Prime Minister of remaining silent during various crises, including the ongoing unrest in Manipur.

Manipur has been embroiled in violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, resulting in around 200 deaths and thousands of displacements due to widespread arson. Recent violence in Jiribam has further exacerbated the situation.

In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh questioned if Bhagwat could persuade Modi to visit Manipur, given the Prime Minister’s lack of response to the demands of the people of Manipur and other crises.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel suggested that Bhagwat’s comments reflect internal differences between the BJP and RSS, which have become apparent over time.

In addressing a gathering of RSS trainees in Nagpur, Bhagwat expressed concern over the prolonged unrest in Manipur and emphasized the need to prioritize peace in the state.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal warned the new NDA government against repeating the mistakes of the past decade under BJP rule.

He highlighted the creation of an “us versus them” environment and stressed the importance of moving the country forward. Sibal also referenced former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s approach to the opposition, contrasting it with Modi’s more adversarial stance.

NCP leader Supriya Sule criticized the government for its lack of response to the Manipur crisis and underscored the need for action and dialogue. She pointed out that despite parliamentary discussions and visits from opposition leaders, the situation in Manipur remains dire.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed skepticism about Modi paying attention to Bhagwat’s advice but reiterated that the INDIA bloc would continue to advocate for the people and uphold democratic principles.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Chandrakant Patil described Bhagwat as a “fatherly figure” with the right to speak on pressing issues.

Meanwhile, despite the state’s significant role, Tejashwi Yadav accused the BJP of neglecting Bihar in the new central government’s portfolio allocation.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot noted that Bhagwat’s criticism of the central government’s handling of the Manipur violence came too late, emphasizing that Rahul Gandhi had shown more proactive concern for the state.
