Paris, July 28: India’s Ramita Jindal made history by qualifying for the medal round of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday, July 28, while her compatriot Elavenil Valarivan missed out.

Ramita became the second female shooter in the last 20 years, after Manu Bhaker, to reach the medal round. She is the first Indian female rifle shooter since her coach Suma Shirur (Athens 2004) to make it to an Olympic final.

Ramita scored 631.5, finishing 5th in the rankings and securing her spot in the medal round. Elavenil, who led at the halfway mark, fell behind in the final three series, finishing 10th in the qualifying round.

The final series was crucial for both shooters, as they aimed to overcome the disappointment of the mixed team event.

Hyojin Ban of Korea won the round with 634.5 points, setting an Olympic Qualification record.

How the Event Unfolded:

  • Ramita’s Strong Start: Ramita began with scores of 10.5 and 10.9, quickly moving to third place after two shots. Valarivan started with 10.6, placing her 8th. Ela then moved to third with her third shot, while Ramita slipped in the rankings.
  • Consistency from Ela: Ela’s consistent shots kept her tied for 5th after the first 8 shots, ending the first round with 105.8 points and starting the second series in 4th place. Ramita finished the first round with 104.3 points and started climbing the rankings in the second series.
  • Ramita’s Steady Climb: Ramita’s strong performance in the second series brought her closer to the top 10, reaching 8th place with a series score of 106. Ela’s performance kept her in the top 3, finishing the second series with 106.1 points.
  • Third Series Challenges: Both shooters faced difficulties in the third series, with Ela dropping to 104.4 points and Ramita to 104.9. However, strong starts in the fourth series brought them back into the top 8.
  • Final Series Drama: In the final series, Ela started strong but ultimately fell to 10th place after a 9.8-point 59th shot, ending with 630.7 points. Ramita maintained her form, finishing with 105.7 points and securing her place in the medal round.

All eyes are now on Manu Bhaker, who will compete in the final round of the women’s 10m Air Pistol on Sunday.

Shillong, July 28: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed strong disapproval of a drag performance at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony that depicted the Last Supper.

“Deeply disappointed by the drag act depicting the Last Supper at the Paris Olympics. Religious sentiments must be respected. Strongly condemn such acts,” Sangma tweeted.

The controversial performance featured 18 drag artists, including three well-known Drag Race France queens, posing behind a long table with the Seine River and Eiffel Tower as the backdrop. A large serving tray on the table contained a scantily clad man painted in sparkling blue.

Critics, including actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, have labelled the act as “hyper-sexualized” and “blasphemous.” Ranaut, recently elected to the Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket, claimed the performance mocked Christianity and included a child among the drag queens.

Billionaire Elon Musk also weighed in, calling the act “extremely disrespectful to Christians” on social media platform X.

The Olympic organizers defended the performance, describing it as an “interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus” meant to highlight “the absurdity of violence between human beings.”

The Paris Olympics, which began on Friday with a nearly four-hour opening ceremony, will continue until August 11. India is represented by 117 athletes at the multi-sports event.

Imphal, July 28: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has formally requested the National Commission for Women (NCW) to recommend and implement initiatives aimed at providing relief and welfare to women affected by the ongoing conflict in Manipur.

In a letter to the NCW Chairperson, COCOMI highlighted the dire conditions faced by over 30,000 women and children displaced since the violence erupted on May 3rd.

COCOMI praised the NCW’s previous efforts, including the launch of the women’s helpline in 2021 and empowerment programs like the ‘Digital Shakti’ campaign.

The committee urged the NCW to continue its support by addressing the current crisis in Manipur.

The letter emphasized the lack of privacy and personal space in relief camps, which has severely impacted the psychological health and education of women and adolescent girls. “The absence of private space for families threatens the already shrinking Meitei population,” stated Yumnam Leirik Leima, Convenor of COCOMI’s Women Wing.

COCOMI outlined several key requests:

  1. Monitoring Cell: Establish a dedicated cell within the NCW to monitor and collect data on the sufferings of victimized women and recommend immediate actions to the central government.
  2. Economic Centers: Create special economic centers in collaboration with national disaster agencies and corporate funds to provide respectable workplaces for women victims of violence.
  3. Girls’ Hostels: Set up dedicated hostels for victimized girls to ensure their continued education and safety.
  4. Educational Sponsorships: Engage educational trusts to sponsor female victims, facilitating their enrollment in comprehensive study programs.
  5. Rehabilitation Programs: Initiate specific policies and programs for the proper rehabilitation of women affected by the violence.

New Governors Appointed in Four Northeastern States

Guwahati, July 28: In a significant reshuffle of gubernatorial positions, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Lakshman Prasad Acharya as the new Governor of Assam, with the additional charge of Manipur.

This announcement, made by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday night, marks a major change in the leadership of several states and union territories.

Acharya, previously the Governor of Sikkim, replaces Gulab Chand Kataria in Assam. Kataria has been appointed as the new Governor of Punjab, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit.

Additionally, Kataria will serve as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The communique from Rashtrapati Bhavan also confirmed Purohit’s resignation from his role as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh.

“Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, appointed as Governor of Assam and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur,” stated the official announcement.

In another key appointment, veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur will take over as the Governor of Sikkim. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who also held additional charge of Telangana, has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra, replacing Ramesh Bais.

Former Union Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar will succeed Radhakrishnan as the Governor of Jharkhand. Former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, Jishnu Dev Varma, is set to become the new Governor of Telangana.

Furthermore, K Kailashnathan, a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Chief Principal Secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

In other notable appointments, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde from Maharashtra will become the Governor of Rajasthan, Ramen Deka from Assam will take over as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, and C H Vijayashankar from Karnataka has been named the Governor of Meghalaya.

Banerjee, the only Chief Minister from an opposition state present, voiced frustration over what she claimed was discrimination in speaking time and a lack of central funds for West Bengal.

Banerjee accused the meeting of bias, citing that other chief ministers, including those from Assam, Goa, and Chhattisgarh, received more time to speak.

She also criticized the government for allegedly silencing her when she addressed the issue of funds.

The Chief Minister labeled the incident as an insult to both Bengal and regional parties, and demanded the abolition of the Niti Aayog, calling for a return to the Planning Commission.

Notably, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also skipped the meeting, with Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha representing the state.

Opposition states have boycotted the meeting in protest against what they perceive as a biased Union Budget that favors NDA allies in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

In a post on the microblogging site X, Sarma affirmed Assam’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of modernizing the Indian Army.

He condemned the Opposition’s attempts to undermine the scheme, stating, “Bharat will ensure Opposition’s mission – to weaken the Indian Army by spreading lies on #AgnipathScheme – is defeated.”

Earlier, on July 26, during the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations, the Congress criticized Prime Minister Modi’s remarks about the Agnipath Scheme. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the Prime Minister for engaging in “petty politics” on such a solemn occasion.

“It is very unfortunate and deplorable that PM Narendra Modi-ji is doing petty politics even on occasions like paying tribute to martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas. No Prime Minister has ever done this before,” Kharge stated.

During his visit to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, PM Modi defended the Agnipath Scheme and accused the Opposition of politicizing national security.

“The Agnipath scheme is also an example of the necessary reforms done by the Army… Unfortunately, some people have made such a sensitive issue related to national security a subject of politics. These are the same people who weakened our Army by committing scams worth thousands of crores,” Modi said.

Kharge countered by accusing the PM of “spreading lies” and pointed out that former Army Chief General MM Naravane had stated that 75% of recruits were to be kept permanently, contrary to the implementation of the scheme which Kharge claimed was done forcibly and did not align with initial plans.

Assam’s Charaideo Maidam Joins UNESCO World Heritage List as ‘Cultural Property’

Guwahati, July 26: The mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, known as ‘Moidams,’ was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List on Friday. This marks the first cultural property from the Northeast to receive this prestigious recognition.

The decision was made during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) being held in India.

Assam’s nomination of ‘Moidams’ for the 2023-24 UNESCO World Heritage List was confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on X (formerly Twitter).

He wrote, “The Moidams make it to the #UNESCO World Heritage list under the category Cultural Property. This is a great win for Assam. Thank you, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, Members of the @UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and the people of Assam.”

Previously, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) had recommended the inclusion of Assam’s ‘Moidams’ on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Janhwij Sharma of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) confirmed that the ‘Moidams’ met the necessary criteria for the UNESCO heritage tag.

The ‘Moidams’ are unique burial mounds used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty, characterized by pyramid-like structures.

These vaulted chambers, often double-storied with an arched passage for entry, feature hemispherical mud mounds topped with layers of bricks and earth.

The base of the mounds is reinforced by a polygonal toe-wall and an arched gateway on the west, as described on the UNESCO website.
