Sports, June 17: Olympics bronze medallist and pride of Assam, Lovlina Borgohain, clinched the silver medal at the Grand Prix 2024 competition held in the Czech Republic.

The event took place from June 12 to 15, where Lovlina showcased her all-around skills in a round-robin format.

On the final day, she faced a fierce battle against China’s Li Qian and narrowly lost the contest 2-3. Despite the loss, her overall performance earned her a silver medal.

Earlier in the competition, Lovlina secured a 3-2 victory against England’s Chantal Reid but faced a setback by losing 0-5 to Cindy Ngamba of the Olympic Refugee team.

Lovlina previously secured a bronze medal in the welterweight category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Expectations are high as she will be one of the key boxers representing India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11.

Her participation adds to India’s formidable boxing squad, which has secured six quotas for the Paris Olympics. The Home Minister received a thorough briefing on the prevailing situation, with an emphasis on ramping up counter-terror measures in the coming days, in line with the Prime Minister’s directive.

Attendees included National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief-designate Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Director General of CRPF Anish Dayal Singh, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police RR Swain, and other top security officials.

The meeting also reviewed preparations for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which began on June 29.

Shah was updated on various aspects of the security situation, including force deployment along the International Border and Line of Control, infiltration attempts, ongoing anti-terror operations, and the strength of terrorists operating in the region.

This meeting followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive to deploy the “full spectrum of counter-terror capabilities” after a series of terror incidents, including an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims.

Recent terror attacks in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the deaths of nine pilgrims and a CRPF jawan, with several security personnel and others injured.

Additionally, two suspected Pakistani terrorists were killed in an encounter in Kathua district, where a significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered.

These incidents occurred before the annual Amarnath pilgrimage to the south Kashmir Himalayas.

IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Gangtok and Surrounding Areas in Sikkim

Weather Update, June 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) have issued an advisory predicting heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Gangtok, Gyalshing, Pakyong, and Soreng over the next 24 hours, starting from 13:00 IST on June 15, 2024.

Residents in these regions are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with weather bulletins for further information.

Meanwhile, more than 1,200 tourists stranded in Sikkim’s Mangan district due to road and communication disruptions may be evacuated on Sunday, June 16, if the weather permits, according to a state government statement.

“The evacuation of tourists from Lachung would begin tomorrow through airlift and roadways, depending on weather conditions,” the statement said on Saturday.

Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Tshering Thendup Bhutia will coordinate the evacuation of the tourists.

According to Tourism and Civil Aviation Secretary CS Rao, around 1,215 tourists, including 15 foreigners, have been stranded in Lachung town for the past week due to incessant rains that have disrupted roads and communication networks in Mangan district, halting vehicle movement to and from the area.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Bihar until June 19.

Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in Meghalaya from June 15 to 19, and in Assam from June 17 to 19. Scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is forecasted for parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha over the next five days.

The IMD also anticipates fairly widespread to widespread rainfall in Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Odisha between June 17 and 19, and in east Bihar on June 18 and 19.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to advance further into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of West Bengal, and parts of Bihar in the next four to five days.

The delayed progress of the Southwest Monsoon has prolonged the heatwave in north and central India, with a 4 percent deficit in cumulative monsoon rainfall reported across the country for the first 12 days of the season. Northwest India has received 53 percent less rainfall than normal, while southern India has experienced 60 percent more rainfall than usual during June 1-12.

The monsoon is forecasted to reach Delhi by the end of June, around June 27, providing relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions.

However, his meeting with US President Joe Biden stood out as a significant diplomatic engagement.

“Had a very productive day at the G7 Summit in Apulia. Interacted with world leaders and discussed various subjects. Together, we aim to create impactful solutions that benefit the global community and create a better world for future generations. I thank the people and government of Italy for their warm hospitality,” PM Modi wrote on X on Saturday morning.

Amid tensions with Canada over the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, PM Modi briefly met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Modi also had a separate interaction with Joe Biden, marking their first conversation since Washington’s allegations of an Indian link to a foiled plot to murder Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
