IMD Forecasts Light to Moderate Rainfall in Eastern and North-Eastern Regions


1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate rainfall across northeast and eastern regions in the next few hours.
2. Sikkim and adjoining areas of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, West Arunachal Pradesh, West Assam, and Meghalaya may experience occasional intense spells.
3. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in extreme northeast Bihar within the next three hours.


Weather Update, June 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate rainfall across northeast and eastern regions in the next few hours.

Sikkim and adjoining areas of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, West Arunachal Pradesh, West Assam, and Meghalaya may experience occasional intense spells.

Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in extreme northeast Bihar within the next three hours.

IMD’s update mentioned, “Expect light to moderate rainfall with occasional intense spells over Sikkim & adjoining areas of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, West Arunachal Pradesh, West Assam, and Meghalaya. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning likely over extreme northeast Bihar for the next 3 hours.”

Earlier, on Thursday, IMD had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls continuing over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Northeast India for the next 4-5 days.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced into Maharashtra, covering regions like Navsari, Jalgaon, Amravati, and Chandrapur, and is expected to progress further into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and northwest Bay of Bengal in the coming 3-4 days.

IMD also issued a heatwave warning for northern India, stating, “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions likely over northern parts of India during the next 4-5 days.”

Manipur Naga Council Bans Congress MP and Two Others from Public Platforms for 7 Years

Imphal, June 14: The United Naga Council (UNC) in Manipur has banned Congress MP Kho John and two others from public platforms for seven years. The decision, taken during an emergency assembly on June 13, follows a resolution passed on May 29, 2024, in Chamdil, Manipur.

The other two individuals affected are S. Kho John and Allyson Abonmai, who contested as independents in the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. They ranked third and fourth, respectively, behind Arthur and Kachui Timothy Zimik of the Naga People’s Front (NPF).

According to the UNC, the trio allegedly defied the Council’s stance during the recent Lok Sabha elections, prompting the punitive action. All Naga units have been instructed to implement the resolution immediately.

In a public notification issued on June 13, the UNC stated that the decision was made due to the individuals’ deliberate disregard for the UNC’s position and their attempt to challenge the unity and position of the Naga people.

As per the notification signed by H. James Hau, the UNC’s information and publicity secretary, Kho John, S. Kho John, and Allyson Abonmai are prohibited from participating in public platforms and holding leadership positions within the Naga society for seven years, effective immediately.

Arthur and Zimik are from the Tangkhul community, while Kho John is Poumai and Abonmai is Liangmai.

The UNC has urged all its constituent and associate units, as well as the Naga populace, to uphold and enforce the resolution within their respective jurisdictions.

Arunachal Receives Rs 217.19 Crore Grant for Advanced Cancer Institute

Itanagar, June 14: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has allocated Rs 217.19 crore for the establishment of a State Cancer Institute at Midpu, Doimukh, ICR, Arunachal Pradesh.

This funding will support the creation of a state-of-the-art 76-bed comprehensive cancer treatment center.

The center is being developed in collaboration with Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, Assam, and Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, both units of Tata Memorial Centre.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his gratitude to the DoNER ministry for the significant sanction in a tweet.

“Once operational, the Centre will immensely benefit our cancer patients who otherwise travel to far-off places for want of better treatment. Together, let us fight the cancer menace!” he wrote.

The institute aims to alleviate the burden on cancer patients who currently travel long distances for specialized treatment, providing them with advanced healthcare closer to home.

Shillong, June 14: Environmentalists have raised alarms over the deteriorating conditions at the famed Shillong Peak, accusing tourists of turning the picturesque locale into a virtual garbage dump.

Members of the Green-Tech Foundation (GTF), a leading non-profit in Meghalaya, were aghast during their visit to the Laitkor site on June 13. They found the iconic meadows littered with discarded plastic bottles, liquor containers, and other waste materials.

GTF Chairperson H. Bansiewdor Nonglang expressed concern that Shillong Peak, a natural treasure and tourist magnet, is being defaced by thoughtless visitors.

According to Nonglang, the area has devolved into an unregulated hangout zone where unchecked drinking and revelry continue until late hours.

Nonglang highlighted multiple shortcomings, including the absence of cautionary signage, boundary fencing, and entry-exit monitoring mechanisms at the site governed by Hima Mylliem authorities.

He noted that unrestricted vehicular movement only compounds the crisis, urging the local Syiem (Chief) to intervene urgently and enforce deterrents.

He cautioned that failure to act could reduce Shillong Peak to a den of illicit activities, irreparably tarnishing its reputation.

The eco-crusaders blamed the lackadaisical attitude of visitors for transforming the once-pristine location into an eyesore.

They vowed to launch campaigns to inculcate a sense of civic responsibility among tourists.

Gangtok, June 14: At least six people have died and around 1,500 tourists are stranded due to massive landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Sikkim’s Mangan district, officials reported.

A newly constructed bailey bridge at Sangkalang collapsed, severing the link between Mangan Dzongu and Chungthang. Landslides have blocked roads, inundated houses, and swept away electricity poles across the region.

Key tourist spots such as Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley in Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung have been cut off.

Mangan District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri confirmed the deaths of three people each in the villages of Pakshep and Ambithang.

Several houses were damaged in Geythang and Nampathang, and a relief camp has been established in Pakshep for displaced residents.

Chettri held an emergency meeting with officials to assess the situation and coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Mobile network services have been disrupted, and the district administration has requested an SDRF team with supplies to assist in Mangan.

The collapse of the Sangkalang Bailey Bridge, built after the Teesta River flood last October, has again disrupted critical connections.

Authorities have advised stranded tourists to remain in place until alternative routes can be established. Efforts are underway to construct a bridge at Phidang to restore regional connectivity.

The landslides blocked roads, flooded houses, and damaged electricity poles across the region.

In Mangan’s Pakshep area, one body was recovered, while three individuals were reported missing from Ambithang near Rangrang and two from Pakshep.

Damage to three houses occurred in Geythang, with additional houses and roads affected in Nampathang near Pentok.

Due to a landslide, the Bringbong police outpost was relocated, and the foundation of a bridge at Sankalan sustained damage.

Mobile network services were disrupted in North Sikkim, prompting the district administration to request assistance from an SDRF team equipped with rations for Mangan.

District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri convened an emergency meeting with department heads to coordinate relief efforts.

An earthmover was dispatched near Mangshila Degree College to clear debris from the roads.

Despite being in Arunachal Pradesh for BJP leader Pema Khandu’s swearing-in ceremony, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang communicated with district officials and police to ensure prompt response to the crisis.

Tamang assured comprehensive support, including recovery aid, temporary shelters, and essential supplies, for the affected families.

He plans to return to Sikkim soon to oversee rescue and relief operations firsthand.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with ministers JP Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, graced the occasion.

Chowna Mein will serve as Deputy Chief Minister in the new cabinet, alongside Biyuram Waghe, Nyato Dukam, Ganriel Denwang Wangsu, Wanki Lowang, Pasang Dorjee Sona, Mama Natung, Dasanglu Pul, Balo Raja, Kento Jini, and Ojing Tasing.

Dasanglu Pul, wife of late Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, becomes Arunachal Pradesh’s first woman minister in decades.

Sports, June 13: Three karate athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, namely Johny Mangkhiya, Abab Sangdo, and Mesom Singhi, have been selected to represent India at the upcoming BRICS Games in Kazan, Russia, scheduled from June 12 to 23.

Mangkhiya will compete in Kumite, while Sangdo and Singhi will participate in the Kata event.

Originally chosen for the 19th Asian Games in China last year, the trio faced visa complications that prevented their participation.

They now form part of an eight-member Indian karate team, comprising four male and four female athletes.

Shillong, June 13: A seminar on the “127th Anniversary of the Great Shillong Earthquake of 1897: Are we prepared?” held at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on June 12 underscored the potentially catastrophic consequences if a similar earthquake struck the region today.

Prof. Devesh Walia of NEHU’s School of Human and Environmental Science highlighted that seismologists estimate a repeat of the 8.7 magnitude earthquake could result in at least 500,000 deaths due to current vulnerabilities and population density.

The Great Shillong Earthquake of 1897, occurring at 5:11 pm, was a landmark event as the first recorded earthquake to break the Earth’s crust surface, claiming 1,542 lives despite most people being awake and outdoors.

Experts stressed the need for preparedness to mitigate devastation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to building codes and improving earthquake prediction.

The seminar also addressed post-earthquake management, disaster response plans, seismic hazard assessment, early warning systems, and community preparedness, with insights from geologists, seismologists, and disaster management experts.

Padmashri Prof. Harsh K Gupta, former Director of NGRI and President of the Geological Society of India, emphasized the inevitability of earthquakes and the significance of effective mitigation measures. He proposed observing June 12 as National Earthquake Day to promote awareness.

GK Kesari, ADG & HoD of the Geological Survey of India’s North-Eastern Region, discussed pressing issues surrounding Seismic Zone V and proposed effective mitigation strategies. Dr. OP Mishra, Advisor and Director of the National Centre for Seismology, stressed the need for resilient infrastructure design.

The event featured a cultural dance performance, an educational skit on earthquake safety by NEHU’s Department of Geology, and a Geo-exhibition showcasing rocks, fossils, and space technology models.

The seminar concluded with the announcement of four participants selected to represent India at the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2024 in Beijing, China.

Commemorating the 127th anniversary of the Great Shillong Earthquake, the seminar served as a sobering reminder of the region’s seismic vulnerability and the importance of proactive disaster risk reduction strategies.

WHO IS PEMA KHANDU?

Pema Khandu, 44, is a prominent BJP leader in Arunachal Pradesh.

He entered politics in 2016, five years after the death of his father, former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, in a helicopter crash. Khandu was elected unopposed from his father’s seat, Mukto.
