Manipur: Over 200 People Relocated to Relief Camp in Jiribam District

1. Over 200 Meitei villagers from Manipur’s Jiribam district relocated to a relief camp after militant violence.
2. Displaced individuals are now sheltered at the Jiri Sports Complex relief camp.
3. Their homes in Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra were burned by suspected militants.

Imphal, June 08: More than 200 members of the Meitei community have been evacuated from their villages in Manipur’s Jiribam district and relocated to a newly established relief camp following a violent outbreak triggered by the killing of a man, allegedly by militants, officials reported on Saturday.

The displaced individuals are now sheltered at the Jiri Sports Complex relief camp after their homes in the villages of Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra in Jiribam district were set ablaze by suspected militants.

Most of these evacuees had been living in villages more than 30 kilometers from Jiribam town, necessitating urgent action to ensure their safety.

An official stated, “More security personnel have been rushed to the area” to stabilize the situation and prevent further violence.

In response to the escalating tension, Manipur police have deployed state police commando personnel from the Imphal Valley to Jiribam on Saturday with immediate effect.

This move aims to reinforce local law enforcement and provide additional security to the affected communities.

The violence erupted on Thursday evening after a 59-year-old man from one community was allegedly killed by militants from another community.

The victim, identified as Soibam Saratkumar Singh, had gone missing after heading to his farm in the morning. His body was later discovered, bearing wounds inflicted by a sharp object, according to a police officer.

The killing sparked outrage among locals, leading to retaliatory actions, including the burning of an abandoned structure.

The tension has been exacerbated by a protest in front of the Jiribam police station, where locals demanded the return of their licensed firearms, which had been confiscated in the wake of recent elections.

Protesters argued that their firearms were necessary for self-defense amidst the growing violence.

Jiribam, known for its diverse ethnic composition, including Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, had until now remained relatively untouched by the ethnic strife that has plagued Manipur since May of the previous year.

The ongoing ethnic conflict between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kukis has resulted in over 200 deaths and rendered thousands of people homeless, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The violence in Jiribam underscores the fragile nature of peace in the area and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms. The government’s response, including the deployment of additional security forces and the establishment of relief camps, highlights the severity of the situation and the critical need to protect vulnerable communities from further harm.

As the situation develops, authorities are focusing on maintaining order and providing relief to the displaced individuals.

The recent incident has drawn attention to the broader issues of ethnic tensions and the need for comprehensive measures to address the underlying causes of the conflict.

The government and local leaders are urged to engage in dialogue and foster an environment of mutual understanding and cooperation to prevent further violence and promote lasting peace in the region.

“I appeal to the Chief Ministers of the respective states to publicly condemn the statement. Together, we must preserve the unique identity of the Northeast,” he added.

The controversy originated from Sarma’s comments on June 4, where he attributed the NDA’s defeat in Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur to the alleged interference of leaders from a specific religion.

Speaking at the BJP’s state office, Sarma suggested that these “religious leaders” actively worked against the ruling alliance, affecting the election results.

In the face of criticism, Sarma reiterated his stance on Twitter, underscoring his observations and stressing the need to differentiate political opponents from religious figures.

Despite the controversy, Sarma celebrated the BJP-led alliance’s success in Assam, where they won 11 out of 14 seats.

2. Decision made amid ongoing economic uncertainties, both domestic and global.
3. Retail inflation persists above target, prompting policy stability to address economic uncertainties.

New Delhi, June 07: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das announced that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to maintain the policy repo rate at 6.5 percent due to persistently high retail inflation, which continues to exceed the target of 4 percent.

This decision is made amidst ongoing economic uncertainties both domestically and globally. Das highlighted that the MPC opted to keep the repo rate unchanged through a majority decision.

He emphasized, “When the projected GDP growth of 7.2% for 2024-25 materializes, it will mark the fourth consecutive year of growth at or above 7%. Headline CPI (Consumer Price Index) continues to follow a disinflationary trajectory. Monetary Policy has played a significant role in this process, as evidenced by the decline in headline inflation by 2.3 percentage points between the first quarter of 2022-23 and the fourth quarter of 2023-24. Supply-side developments and government measures have also contributed to this moderation of headline inflation. However, repeated food price shocks have slowed down the overall disinflation process.”

Mizoram’s Pig Farms Devastated by African Swine Fever Outbreak

1. Mizoram’s ASF outbreak: 1,500 pigs and piglets dead since year start, states official.
2. The highly contagious disease affects 80 villages across seven districts in Mizoram.
3. ASF outbreak prompts concerns in Mizoram’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.

Aizawl, June 07: The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Mizoram has resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,500 pigs and piglets since the beginning of this year, according to an official from the state’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.

The highly contagious viral disease has currently affected 80 villages or localities across seven districts in the northeastern state. On June 6 alone, 64 pigs succumbed to the disease, while 235 were culled to prevent further spread.

The official stated, “At least 1,488 pigs have died due to ASF, and 3,002 have been culled to prevent the dreaded swine fever since January.”

The outbreak was first reported in March 2021 at Lungsen village in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district, near the Bangladesh border.

Authorities believe the disease was introduced through illegally imported pigs from the neighboring country, as Mizoram shares a 318-km-long international border with Bangladesh.

Statistics from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department reveal the severity of the outbreak, with 33,417 pigs dying due to ASF in 2021, 12,795 in 2022, and 1,039 in 2023 so far. To control the spread, 12,568 pigs were culled in 2021, 11,686 in 2022, and 928 in 2023.

To mitigate further spread, the state government has imposed a ban on the import of pigs from outside Mizoram. Additionally, the department has implemented strict measures, including prohibiting the import or export of pigs from infected zones.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious and fatal viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. The outbreak has dealt a severe blow to the state’s pig farming industry, causing significant economic losses and disrupting livelihoods.

Efforts are underway to contain the spread of the disease and revive the pig farming sector in Mizoram, but the situation remains challenging as authorities continue their vigilance and control measures amidst the ongoing outbreak.

3. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported the ongoing impact in various districts.

Guwahati, June 07: The flood situation in Assam showed significant improvement on Thursday, though approximately 1.3 lakh people are still grappling with the aftermath across seven districts, according to an official bulletin.

The latest report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) indicates that more than 1,29,500 people remain affected by the floods in Cachar, Hailakandi, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Morigaon, and Nagaon districts.

Among these, Nagaon is the most severely impacted, with over 55,000 residents suffering, followed by Cachar with 51,000 affected individuals and Karimganj, where 11,000 people are still dealing with floodwaters.

Just a day earlier, nearly 2.5 lakh people were impacted across eight districts by the floodwaters.

This year’s monsoon-related calamities, including floods, landslides, and storms, have resulted in a total of 34 casualties to date.

In response to the ongoing crisis, authorities are managing 78 relief camps across five districts, which currently house 16,947 people.

Additionally, 25 relief distribution centres are operating in the same districts to support the affected populations.

Over the last 24 hours, relief efforts have been robust, with the distribution of 318.11 quintals of rice, 42.57 quintals of dal, 12.25 quintals of salt, and 1,912.9 litres of mustard oil among the flood victims.

Despite the overall improvement, the situation remains dire in many areas. A total of 293 villages are still submerged, and 5,702.1 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across the state, according to the ASDMA report.

Floodwaters have inflicted damage on critical infrastructure, including embankments, roads, and bridges, particularly in the Cachar, Hojai, Morigaon, and Nagaon districts.

The ASDMA also reported that the Kopili River at Kampur and Dharamtul, as well as the Kushiyara River at Karimganj, continue to flow above the danger marks, exacerbating the flood situation in these regions.

The extensive flooding has not only affected human lives but also impacted livestock significantly. Over 26,800 domestic animals and poultry are affected statewide, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Efforts to alleviate the situation are in full swing, with both state authorities and local communities working tirelessly to provide relief and restore normalcy.

The focus now is on providing continuous support to the affected populations, ensuring they receive the necessary aid to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

As the floodwaters gradually recede, the authorities are expected to intensify their efforts to repair damaged infrastructure and support agricultural recovery.

Northeast Frontier Railway Launches Advanced High-Speed Coaches in Dibrugarh

1. Northeast Frontier Railway’s Dibrugarh Workshop begins producing High-Speed Automobile Carrier coaches from old GSCN coaches.
2. These new NMGHS coaches are designed for transporting automobiles, especially two-wheelers.
3. They feature side doors for easy loading and unloading.

Dibrugarh, June 06: In a significant development for Indian Railways, the Northeast Frontier Railway (N.F. Railway) zone’s Dibrugarh Workshop has commenced production of new High-Speed Automobile Carrier (NMGHS) coaches, repurposed from old GSCN coaches.

These innovative coaches are specifically designed for transporting automobiles, particularly two-wheelers, and feature side doors for easy loading and unloading.

Since receiving approval from the Railway Board, three NMGHS coaches have been manufactured in a remarkably short time, with the production of an additional three coaches currently underway.

This initiative marks the first time in Indian Railways’ history that coaches for automobile transportation are being introduced with multiple enhanced features, significantly improving over traditional freight coaches in terms of speed, accessibility, and loading capacity.

The NMGHS coaches, developed by N.F. Railways, were designed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with automobile manufacturers, using decommissioned passenger coaches.

So far, three coaches have been rolled out from the Dibrugarh workshop, each boasting a higher payload capacity of 18 tonnes, compared to the 12 tonnes of traditional freight coaches.

These newly designed coaches can reach speeds of up to 110 km per hour and incorporate various improvements such as wider openings, natural pipe lighting, pavement markers, retro-reflective tape for guidance, a strong floor with the chequered sheet, an enhanced fall plate arrangement for smoother entry, and an upgraded end door design with a barrel lock for easier locking.

Additionally, they are designed to accommodate the opening of four-wheeler automobile doors inside the coach without causing any damage and can also serve as parcel vans for transporting a variety of goods.

Indian Railways has increasingly become the preferred mode of transportation for automobile manufacturers due to its cost-effectiveness, speed, and environmental benefits compared to road transportation.

As a result, various types of automobiles are now being transported directly from manufacturing plants to all Northeast states at a lower cost, benefiting the general public.
