WHO Confirms First Human Avian Influenza Fatality in Mexico

1. April: A person with health issues died in Mexico from bird flu, per WHO.
2. Virus exposure source remains unidentified.
3. WHO’s statement on Wednesday confirms the situation.

Mexico, June 06: In April, a person with pre-existing health issues died in Mexico after contracting bird flu, as per the World Health Organization’s statement on Wednesday.

The source of the virus exposure remains unidentified.

The individual, a 59-year-old from the State of Mexico, was hospitalized in Mexico City and succumbed on April 24. Symptoms included fever, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, nausea, and general discomfort.

Although the specific source of exposure is unclear, WHO mentioned the presence of A(H5N2) viruses in Mexican poultry.

This marked the first confirmed human case of influenza A(H5N2) globally and the first avian H5 virus reported in Mexico. Scientists noted this case is unrelated to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in the United States.

Mexico’s Health Ministry confirmed the victim’s chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes but couldn’t determine the infection source. Despite no history of poultry exposure, the person’s multiple underlying conditions increased influenza severity.

While Mexico previously reported an A(H5N2) outbreak, there’s no evidence of its transmission risk to distant farms or human health. Mexican authorities notified WHO after the April death, confirming the virus’s presence.

The case didn’t involve person-to-person transmission, and close contacts tested negative for bird flu. Although rare, bird flu has infected mammals like seals and bears, primarily through contact with infected birds.

With H5 viruses showing a propensity to infect mammals since 1997, scientists emphasize vigilance.

Recent cases in the United States and Australia highlight the ongoing need for monitoring and prevention efforts.

2. Modi is likely to take oath on June 8 at 8 pm after the BJP-led NDA secures 293 seats.
3. NDA crosses majority mark in Lok Sabha elections with 293 seats.

New Delhi, June 06: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe are among the foreign dignitaries set to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, according to reports.

Modi is expected to take the oath on June 8 at 8 pm, after the BJP-led NDA won 293 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, surpassing the majority mark. The opposition INDIA bloc secured 234 seats, contrary to exit poll predictions. Leaders from Bhutan, Nepal, and Mauritius are also expected to be invited to the ceremony.

In 2019, after the Lok Sabha elections, India invited leaders of BIMSTEC countries to Modi’s swearing-in. The BIMSTEC regional group includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The 2019 event saw around 8,000 guests, including VVIPs.

In 2014, for Modi’s first-term swearing-in, all SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) leaders, including then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, attended the ceremony.

On Wednesday, PM-elect Modi called Ranil Wickremesinghe to invite him to the swearing-in ceremony, which the Sri Lankan President accepted, according to sources.

“During the conversation, Prime Minister @narendramodi invited President Wickremesinghe to his swearing-in ceremony, which President @RW_UNP accepted,” the Sri Lankan President’s office confirmed.

Modi also spoke with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and both leaders pledged to continue working together towards the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and ‘Smart Bangladesh 2041’, as reported.

Sheikh Hasina, one of the first foreign leaders to congratulate Modi on the NDA’s win, accepted the invitation to attend the ceremony.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth are also likely to be invited. Formal invitations to the foreign leaders will be sent on Thursday.

In 2019, 24 Union ministers took oath alongside Narendra Modi, with 24 ministers of state (MoS) and 9 MoS (independent charge) also sworn in by the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This time, the Modi 3.0 Cabinet is expected to have greater representation from its allies, as the BJP did not achieve a majority on its own.

BJP’s Alliance with Tipra Motha Secures Sweeping Lok Sabha Victories in Tripura

1. BJP’s alliance with Tipra Motha secured decisive wins in West and East Tripura constituencies.
2. The ruling BJP retained its seats in both constituencies.
3. BJP significantly increased its vote share compared to the 2019 Parliamentary elections.

Agartala, June 06: An analysis of the Lok Sabha election results in Tripura reveals that the BJP’s alliance with the tribal-based party Tipra Motha was instrumental in securing decisive victories in both West Tripura and East Tripura constituencies.

The ruling BJP not only retained its seats but also significantly increased its vote share compared to the 2019 Parliamentary elections.

In West Tripura, the BJP candidate’s vote share surged from 51.74% in 2019 to an impressive 72.67% in 2024.

Similarly, in Tripura East, the party nominee’s vote share jumped from 43.32% in 2019 to 68.48% in 2024.

BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee credited the party’s strengthened position in the state’s tribal areas to the alliance with Tipra Motha, stating, “The result shows that the party’s vote share increased in both Parliamentary seats.”

Rajya Sabha MP and former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb won the Tripura West Lok Sabha seat, defeating his nearest rival Asish Kumar Saha of the Congress by a substantial margin of 6,11,578 votes. In 2019, the BJP had won this seat by a margin of 5,73,532 votes.

In Tripura East, Kriti Devi Debbarman, sister of Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma, secured victory by defeating her nearest CPI(M) rival Rajendra Reang by 4,86,819 votes. The BJP had previously won this seat by 4.5 lakh votes in 2019.

The Tipra Motha, formerly the main opposition party in Tripura, joined the BJP-led government on March 7, just nine days before the Lok Sabha elections were announced. With 13 MLAs in the 60-member assembly, the party secured two ministerial positions.

Tipra Motha leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma acknowledged the party’s critical role in the BJP’s victory, stating, “It was not possible for the BJP alone to win both Lok Sabha seats massively. We want the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to assume office shortly to implement the agreement signed with the party for the benefit of Tiprasa (indigenous) people.”

The tripartite agreement signed on March 2, involving Tipra Motha, the Tripura government, and the Centre, aims to amicably resolve all issues related to the history, land, political rights, economic development, identity, culture, and language of the indigenous people of Tripura.

The BJP’s alliance with Tipra Motha proved to be a game-changer, cutting into the vote share of the CPI(M), which had maintained significant influence in the state’s tribal belt during its 25-year rule until 2018.

2. He is a member of the ruling alliance and represents the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
3. Choudhury has served as an MLA from the Bongaigaon legislative constituency since 1985, with eight consecutive terms.

Guwahati, June 05: Phani Bhusan Choudhury, Assam’s longest-serving MLA, has won the Lok Sabha elections from the Barpeta constituency as a member of the ruling alliance.

Representing the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Choudhury has been an MLA from the Bongaigaon legislative constituency in the Assam Assembly since 1985, serving eight consecutive terms.

This victory marks his first successful bid for the Lok Sabha, following an unsuccessful attempt in 2014 when AGP had no alliance and he finished fourth in Barpeta.

In the recent election, Choudhury secured 8,60,113 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Congress’s Deep Bayan, who received 6,37,762 votes.

Choudhury won by a margin of 2,22,351 votes. The Barpeta constituency has undergone significant demographic changes, becoming a Hindu majority seat from previously being Muslim-dominated after a delimitation exercise last year.

Before the voting on May 7, Choudhury mentioned that the increase in Hindu voters after delimitation would likely aid his victory.

Barpeta, a religiously and linguistically sensitive constituency, has about 19.8 lakh voters, with over 12 lakh Hindus and around seven lakh Muslims.

This demographic shift led Congress to nominate Deep Bayan, the state Seva Dal chief, over the sitting MP Abdul Khaleque.

Choudhury, a 72-year-old politician known for his simple lifestyle and clean image, held several portfolios during the second AGP government (1996-2001) and the first BJP government (2016-2021).

Despite AGP being a part of the current BJP-led government in Assam with two ministers, Choudhury has not been offered a ministerial position this time.

In January 2019, after AGP broke ties with BJP over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Choudhury was seen crying upon his return to Bongaigaon from Guwahati, an image that went viral.

However, AGP rejoined the NDA alliance within two months and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Assam in partnership with the BJP.

Weather Forecast, June 05: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Assam and Meghalaya for today, June 5, 2024.

According to the latest IMD weather bulletin, these northeastern states will experience significant downpours due to the advancing monsoon.

The IMD stated that “heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya,” as part of a broader weather pattern affecting several regions across India.

This forecast comes amid ongoing heatwave conditions in various parts of the country, including East Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

In addition to heavy rainfall, the IMD has also predicted lightning, hail, and squally winds in several areas, which could exacerbate the situation in Assam and Meghalaya. Residents in these states are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information.

The heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya is part of a larger meteorological scenario where the southern peninsula, including Kerala and Karnataka, is also experiencing substantial rainfall due to the monsoon’s onset.

The IMD’s forecast highlights the dual weather challenges facing the country, with some regions bracing for intense heat while others prepare for heavy rains.

As the monsoon progresses, it is expected to bring much-needed relief to the parched regions of India while simultaneously posing challenges related to flooding and waterlogging in areas like Assam and Meghalaya.

Authorities in these states are likely to be on high alert to manage any potential adverse impacts from the expected heavy rainfall.
