Kolkata, Jan 02: At least three more people, who returned to Kolkata from London on December 20, have been detected with Covid-19, prompting authorities to send their samples for genome sequencing to ascertain whether they were infected with the new and more contagious strain of the disease found in the UK.

Coronavirus vaccine dry run begins across India

Delhi, Jan 02: All states and Union Territories have conducted a dry run for Coronavirus vaccination to test the linkages between planning and implementation on Saturday to ensure that phase 1 of the vaccination drive against the Covid-19 infection goes glitch-free.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Saturday visited Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi to review the COVID-19 vaccination dry run drill.

The Union Health Ministry said Maharashtra and Kerala are likely to schedule in major cities other than their capital but some states will include districts that are situated in difficult terrain/have poor logistical support.

Harsh Vardhan said the government’s priority is to ensure the safety and efficacy of the coronavirus vaccine.

“I appeal to people not to pay heed to the rumours. Ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccines is our priority. Different kinds of rumours were spread during polio immunisation but people took the vaccine and India is now polio-free,” he said.

Speaking to media, a civil surgeon said, “Data of healthcare workers from Maharashtra have been uploaded on CoWIN.”

The first round was conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, and Punjab on 28-29 December in two districts each where five-session sites with 25 beneficiaries each were identified.

What is a dry run?

It is essentially a practice session where a sample number of beneficiaries will go through a mock immunisation process. Apart from the staff of the designated vaccination centres, the dry run will see the participation of a select group of healthcare workers as test vaccine beneficiaries. Each centre will identify 25 test beneficiaries for the dry run.

It is being conducted across all states and UTs. Each state and UT has been asked to conduct the dry run at minimum three-session sites in their capitals.

Suvendu Adhikari’s brother Soumendu joins BJP

Bengal, Jan 1: Former TMC leader Soumendu Adhikari, who was recently removed from the post of administrator at Contai Municipality by the Mamata Banerjee-led government joined the BJP along with a host of other TMC workers on Friday.

Soumendu was accompanied by his brother Suvendu Adhikari, a former TMC leader who had switched to the saffron party recently.

“We will win this battle. A new government will be formed that will move forward with Narendra Modi’s ideals and promise to make the state ‘Sonar Bangla’,” Suvendu said at Purba Medinipur after joining BJP.

The Adhikari household has two other members in the TMC camp — MPs Dibyendu and Sisir.

Suvendu, who had resigned from the TMC on December 16, was a member of the party’s steering committee and state committee, and a leader of its trade union front. In November 2020, he had quit the Cabinet where he held three important departments.

Three days later, Suvendu, Bardhaman Purba MP Sunil Kumar Mondal and nine other MLAs joined the BJP in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a public meeting in Midnapore.

Suvendu represented the Nandigram constituency in Purba Medinipur district and was the face of the Nandigram movement, which catapulted Mamata Bannerjee to power in 2011.

Assam: Cong slams BJP for police assault on women farmers

Assam, Jan 01: The Assam Congress slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led a coalition government for alleged police brutality on the State’s women farmers for resisting the takeover of their farmlands.

The incident took place at Bamuni Mikirgaon in central Assam’s Nagaon district. As per the reports, the police cane-charged some women who were protesting the government’s bid to evict them from their farmlands on December 29. The government allegedly wants the land to be handed over to some private firms, the villagers said.

“At a time when the entire country has been standing with the farmers, the BJP government in Assam has started violent attacks on farmers without even sparing the women in Nagaon,” Congress spokesperson Bobbeeta Sarma said.

About 100 indigenous farmers have been cultivating rice and bean on a sizeable chunk of land in the village for more than 20 years and according to the local unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), they have been paying revenue to the government.

“We will not tolerate such atrocities on peasants at a time when farmers are demanding the repeal of anti-farmer laws, brought about by the Centre,” local AJYCP leader Deep Moni Bora said, adding that the police cane-charged the protesters — many of them women — without any provocation.

A few farmers were injured in the clash with the police. The district police, however, blamed the farmers for the violence. Three of them were arrested.

Suvendu Adhikari’s brother Soumendu moves HC against Bengal govt

Bengal, Jan 1: Soumendu Adhikari has filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court against the West Bengal government challenging his removal from the post of administrator of Contai Municipality in Purba Medinipur district.

Adhikari claimed that he has been illegally removed by the West Bengal government’s Municipal Affairs Department from the post of administrator of the civic body. Adhikari was the chairman of Contai Municipality till the term of the board expired in 2019.

He was then appointed as its administrator since elections were postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

As Suvendu boycott the political programmes of the TMC, Soumendu Adhikari has also not participated in the recent political programmes of the TMC in Purba Medinipur and a section of the TMC leaders alleges that he was supporting his brother’s mass contact programmes in the district in the last two months.

On December 30, days after Suvendu Adhikari joined BJP, the Bengal government removed his brother Soumendu Adhikari from the post of Chairperson of Contai Municipality and placed Siddhartha Maity at the position.

The decision was taken by Firhad Hakim, who is a close aide of CM Mamata and also the minister of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs. So far, there are no reports of talks between BJP and Suvendu’s family – his other brother and his father – who are still MPs of Trinamool Congress.

West Bengal assembly with 294 seats will go to polls in April-May 2021, Trinamool holds 222 seats. BJP has made major inroads in the state in the Lok Sabha elections winning 18 seats and establishing itself as the major opposition force in the state.

Recently TMC trumped BJP in all 3 polls but the BJP is using its booth-level strategy, has placed its top leaders including Amit Shah and JP Nadda in the state for winning the upcoming elections.

China finishes railway track laying close to Arunachal

Arunachal-China border, Jan 1: China finishes the track-laying work for a railway line connecting the cities of Lhasa and Nyingchi in Tibet, close to the Indian border at Arunachal Pradesh.

The line will pass through the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the world’s most geologically active areas. Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

As per the reports, Xinhua is the first electrified railroad in Tibet and is slated to begin operations in June next year.

WHO grants Pfizer COVID vaccine for emergency use

COVID Vaccine, Jan 1: The World Health Organization (WHO) granted emergency validation to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine, paving the way for countries worldwide to quickly approve its distribution.

Britain launched its inoculation drive with the US-German vaccine on December 8, with the United States, Canada, and EU countries following suit.

Since the novel coronavirus first broke out in China a year ago, WHO said the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was the first to receive its “emergency validation.”

This is a very positive step towards ensuring global access to COVID-19 vaccines. But I want to emphasize the need for an even greater global effort to achieve enough vaccine supply to meet the needs of priority populations everywhere.

WHO said its emergency use listing opens the way for regulators in different countries to approve the import and distribution of the vaccine.

It said it also enables UNICEF, which plays a key logistical role in distributing anti-Covid vaccines, and the Pan-American Health Organization to procure the vaccine for countries that need it.

WHO convened its own experts and those from around the world to review the data on the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine’s “safety, efficacy and quality,” weighing the benefits against the risks.

“The review found that the vaccine met the must-have criteria for safety and efficacy set out by WHO, and that the benefits of using the vaccine to address COVID-19 offset potential risks,” it said.
