Sikkim Governor virtually inaugurates Molecular Lab of SMIMS for COVID, HIV testing

Sikkim, 4th December: Ganga Prasad, the Governor of Sikkim inaugurated the Molecular Laboratory of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences on Friday.

Chief Minister PS Tamang and Health Minister Dr MK Sharma was also there in the inaugural ceremony.

The Laboratory has been accredited to the National Accreditation Board of Testing & Calibration Laboratories, for molecular testing.

The lab has been permitted to initiate COVID 19 testing. It will also conduct HIV testing and many more.

The testing facility is regarded as a boon for the people of Sikkim, during the COVID-19 Pandemic in addition to Government Hospital.

Re-poll of Mizoram’s North Vanlaiphai Village Council

Mizoram, 4th December: The state election commission of Mizoram announced a re-poll to constitute North Vanlaiphai Village Council in the Serchhip district on Thursday.

The state election commission’s decision came after 15 people filed complaints about the discrepancies in the village council polls held on August 27, seeking a re-poll in North Vanlaiphai.

As per the notification issued by the state election the commission, a re-poll for the 7-member North Vanlaiphai Village Council will be held on December 10.

Counting of votes will be undertaken as soon as the polling is over. The election of the returned candidates in the recently held general election was declared null and void.

In September, the poll panel had received petitions from at least 42 village councils, including North Vanlaiphai and 6 local councils in Aizawl seeking re-poll or recounting of votes and probe into alleged discrepancies in the poll process.

As for the North Vanlaiphai Village Council, at least 15 people, including 10 candidates who have contested the previous election have submitted a complaint to the state election commission.

Following this, the election tribunal for Serchhip the district investigated the matter and in the process found that there were irregularities and discrepancies in the last poll held on August 27.

There are seven members in North Vanlaiphai Village Council, of which the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) had won four seats while Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) bagged 2 and Congress 1.

Polling for the 558 village councils in 9 districts and 83 local councils in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) area was held from August-September.

MNF swept the rural and urban body polls by winning more than 300 rural bodies out of 558 in 9 districts and over 70 urban bodies out of 83 in Aizawl.

5 Shops gutted along Assam-Nagaland border

Northeast, 3rd December:  At least five shops were burnt to ashes after a devastating fire broke out in the Lahorijan area of the Assam-Nagaland border. The fire spread to the nearby buildings and caused an atmosphere of panic among the residents.

The burnt establishments included a garment store, a hardware store, a mobile repairing centre, and a grocery store. Property worth several crores was damaged in the fire. Shops and residences on either side of the area were also affected.

A dozen fire tenders from the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Service battled the blaze and doused off the flames. The Assam counterpart reached only after the fire was brought under control.

Preliminary investigation has been suggested at Assam-Nagaland border, that the fire might have been caused by an electric short circuit. No casualties were reported till the filing of this report.

‘King of Spices’ no more! MDH owner Dharampal Gulati passes away

India, 3rd December: ‘King of Spices’ Dharampal Gulati, the owner and face of masala brand MDH Spices passed away on Thursday at age of 97.

As per reports, Dharampal Gulati was undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi where he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Gulati was born in Sialkot (now in Pakistan) on March 27, 1923, and later migrated to India after the partition. He dropped out of school and set up a small business in 1937 with the help of his father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati, before joining the family business of spices.

After the partition, Gulati opened a shop in Delhi’s Karol Bagh and restarted his family business of ground spices and under the “Mahashian Di Hatti of Sialkot” banner. MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) now has 15 factories across India and exports nearly 50 different types of spices across the world.

Gulati, affectionately called ‘Dadaji‘ by some, was reportedly India’s highest-paid consumer products CEO in 2017 when he took home more than Rs 21 crore as salary.

Often referred to as the ‘King of Spices‘, Gulati appeared in several advertisements for MDH products. But he was also known for his work towards improving the quality of education and was associated with several educational institutions. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.

Female voters to outnumber males in Mizoram

Mizoram, 3rd November: Female voters are set to outnumber the male counterparts on the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls in Mizoram.

More than 2.18 lakh voters will cast their votes in the polls that are scheduled to be held this year. However, the date is yet to be finalized due to the uncertainty residing in the state because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, said, election officials.

According to a draft published on Thursday, female voters have outnumbered their male counterparts by 15,520 this time.

Of the total 2, 18,870 voters in 19 municipal wards in the Aizawl municipal area, 1, 17,195 female voters will cast their votes in the upcoming municipal polls.

The draft electoral rolls were prepared for special summary revision of voters’ lists in view of the upcoming AMC polls, an official said.

The period date for filing claim and objection has been fixed on 2-5 December 3, 2020.

Actor Rajinikanth to launch a political party in January

India, 3rd December: Superstar Rajinikanth on Thursday said he will launch his political party in January 2021, and the formal announcement regarding the same will be made on December 31.

Rajinikanth said, “We will surely win assembly polls and give an honest, transparent, corruption-free, and spiritual politics. A wonder and miracle will definitely happen.”

He had announced him entering politics on Dec 31 in 2017. Rajinikanth had met his district secretaries of RMM on Monday and had said he will announce the same soon while talking to the people.

Rajini had called his line of politics spiritual, which was beyond religion, corruption, and one for the welfare of the people. He had asked his supporters to go to every street in the state and pass the message about his intentions.

In 1996 Rajinikanth had openly supported the DMK and had called for “Saving Tamil Nadu from Jayalalithaa” and in that election when AIADMK was defeated Rajinikanth was seen as a major game-changer and many had been expecting him to make his political party entry. But the wait for his political announcement came to an end, a year after Jaya’s death.

CM Mamata to inaugurate Majerhat Bridge today

Bengal, 3rd December: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the newly constructed Jai Hind Bridge (Majerhat Bridge) on Diamond Harbour Road near Taratala in South Kolkata on Thursday.

CM, who named the bridge Jai Hind Bridge paying tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with the state government organizing year-long programs celebrating his 125th birth anniversary, will be inaugurating the same at 5 pm from the inaugural program at the intersection of Diamond Harbour Road and NR Avenue.

The bridge, on the arterial Diamond Harbour Road, connects the central part of the city to the southwestern suburbs of Behala and beyond.

Last week, Minister of Public Works Aroop Biswas visited Majerhat Bridge and said “Cable Bridge used to take around 24 months to complete but we have completed the work within a year. We have to stop the work in the middle due to the pending permission from Railway for around 9 months, and 3 months for COVID. We have completed this in a record time. 99.8% of the work has been done. I guess the bridge will open from the first week of December.”

The decision to inaugurate the bridge was taken on Saturday, a day after the railway and the PWD, which has implemented the Rs 200-crore project, submitted a “safety certificate” about the structure to the state government.

Senior officials of the PWD said final touches were being given to the structure ahead of the inauguration.

The police said the Bailey bridge, set up parallel to the Majerhat Bridge after the old structure had collapsed in September 2018, will remain open, providing commuters an additional option to travel in the north-south direction.

Arunachal CM Pema Khandu will meet PM Modi to discuss Article 371 (H)

Arunachal, 3rd December: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu will be going to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for discussing Article 371 (H) of the Constitution.

It was said by Chief Minister Khandu himself while speaking at the Indigenous Faith Day celebration in Itanagar.

Referring to Article 371 (H) of the Constitution, Khandu said that feedbacks from community-based organizations (CBOs) have been received and will sit with PM Modi to discuss it.

Khandu opined that when Arunachal Pradesh was conferred statehood in 1987, people were not educated and well aware of their tribal rights and constitutional provisions.

He hoped that the Narendra Modi-led central government will understand the issue and resolve it for the indigenous tribes of the state.

Arunachal Pradesh Assembly in August passed a resolution to bring the State under the ambit of the sixth schedule of the Constitution and to amend Article 371-H.

Article 371H vests the governor of Arunachal Pradesh with special responsibility in respect to the law and order situation in the state and in the discharge of his functions in relation thereto.

It also states that the Legislative Assembly shall consist of not less than thirty members.

What is Article 371-H?

The special provision concerning the State of Arunachal Pradesh:-

(a) The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh shall have special responsibility concerning law and order in the State of Arunachal Pradesh and in the discharge of his functions in relation thereto, the Governor shall, after consulting the Council of Ministers, exercise his individual judgment as to the action to be taken:

Provided that if any question arises whether any the matter is or is not a matter as respects which the Governor is under this the clause required to act in the exercise of his individual judgment, the decision of the Governor in his discretion shall be final, and the validity of anything done by the Governor shall not be called in question on the ground that he ought or ought not to have acted in the exercise of his individual judgment:

Provided further that if the President on receipt of a report from the Governor or otherwise is satisfied that it is no longer necessary for the Governor to have a special responsibility concerning the law and order in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, he may by order direct that the Governor shall cease to have such responsibility with effect from such date as may be specified in the order;

(b) The Legislative Assembly of the State of Arunachal Pradesh shall consist of not less than thirty members.

Manipur: First primary school opens in hamlet in 48 years

Manipur, 3rd December: Varangalai, a small hamlet in Manipur’s Ukhrul district has got a government primary school for the first time.

Children from the hamlet have been attending schools in Ukhrul town as there were no school, which is situated about 32 kilometres away.

The government school building was inaugurated by Chingai MLA Khashim Vashum.

The six-room building of the primary school has been constructed by local councillor Paothing Vashum with the State Fund-2019-20 of the district council.

The hamlet with only 36 houses, is within the jurisdiction of the Phungcham village in the district.

Though the hamlet was established in 1972, it has seen no development even after so many years.

The hamlet is in need of many basic facilities, including a supply of clean drinking water round the clock.

“We have been sending our children to Ukhrul town for the past 40 years in absence of a school in Varangalai,” a report quoted Ningkhan Pheirei, local chairman of Varangalai.

“We have been facing a lot of economic hardship because of this,” he said.

Visva Bharati invites PM Modi on 100th Foundation day

Bengal, 3rd December: The authority of Visva Bharati University has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 100th founding day in Shantiniketan of Bolpur city under Birbhum district in West Bengal.

Kishore Bhattacharya, the authority member of Visva-Bharat said “We had a meeting among administration and our staff committee to discuss the upcoming Poush Utsav amid this COVID situation. To maintain the Government protocols, we have to organize this Poush Utsav in our Chatimtola and Upasona Bhawan. This year will be special because Viswa Bharati is situated in 1921, in 2021 it will be 100 years, so if our preceptor will come, it will be great, and the vice-chancellor is trying to bring him. Many important VIPs along with some central ministers are also expected to attend the ceremony.”

Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty, Acting Working Secretary Ashok Mahat, and a representative of the staff Santiniketan Trust hold a meeting with ongoing staffs.

“Our primary discussion was about how we will organize it in COVID situation. The staff committee members, members of Viswa Bharati trust, the members of Alapini association along the vice-chancellor from the administration were present. Our working secretary was there and we had a long discussion. After that, we have decided on four names for our four gates which we have. We made a committee and they decided the names. Vice-chancellor discussed how we can maintain the Dormitory,” Bhattacharya said.

The main concern is to follow the protocols of COVID while organizing this.

“He listened to everyone’s suggestion. He also talked about gate and field decoration. As he is the head of Viswa Bharati, he talked with other members and the CMO. He will take the decision. The main discussion was about how we can organize the Poush Utsav nicely. There will be more meetings in the upcoming days. We will celebrate the foundation day on 8th Poush at Amro Kunjo. We are inviting our Chancellor, the central education minister, our director, and many other respected persons. We will make an invitation card. Poush Utsav and all other programs will be organized,” Bhattacharya added.

The 100th foundation day program in Visva Bharati will be organized in respect of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Rabindranath Tagore.

“We and all the members will decide everything along with the budget. We have invited the chancellor. He is a busy person. The Vice-chancellor will try to bring him. We will organize the program by giving respect to Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Rabindranath Tagore. We will work to glorify our organization with the cooperation of everyone,” said Kishore Bhattacharya.

Visva-Bharati is a public research centre university and an Institution of National Importance located in West Bengal. It was founded by Rabindranath Tagore who called it Visva-Bharati, which means the communion of the world with India. Until independence, it was a college. Soon after independence, the institution was given the status of a central university in 1951 by an act of the Parliament.
