Shillong, July 30: The Meghalaya government has issued a show-cause notice to a Shillong based hospital after a pregnant woman was denied to admission at the hospital who came from a containment zone following which a newborn baby died due to lack of medical care.

According to the reports, Ganesh Das Hospital, Shillong had allegedly denied admission to a pregnant woman on Tuesday as she had come from Mawlai Mawtawar area – a COVID-19 containment zone in the capital city of Meghalaya.

After an intervention by some locals, the hospital authority had allowed the pregnant woman to deliver the child at the hospital, but the newborn baby died.

Following the incident, the Meghalaya government on Wednesday has issued a show-cause notice to the hospital.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the state government has asked the health department to issue a show-cause notice to Ganesh Das Hospital.

Sikkim: Authorities not reaching out for help complain locals

Sikkim, July 22: As the number of Covid-19 positive cases are on an alarming spike in Sikkim, complaints of local authorities not reaching out for help are coming from places across Sikkim.

In East Sikkim’s Duga village, locals have been putting out such allegations against local authorities.

“Sikkim authorities is not being able to provide ambulances and other support and we are managing vehicles on our own to take primary contacts for test”,  said Bharat Kumar Chettri, member of panchayat Member of the Cheuribotey ward in the village.

As the total number of cases has reached 14 in the area, it seems that authorities are finding it a challenge to meet the demands of the needy and trace down the primary and secondary contacts of coronavirus infected patients.

“Till now as many as 14 patients have been reported positive from the area and as per the rule the concerned authority is supposed to trace the primary contacts and send ambulances but no action is being taken. So we are disappointed.”, shared Bharat Kumar Chettri. So it seems that all is not well in Duga, and health authorities are failing to reach out to the common man in the hour of need.

Locals further informed that most of the cases reported from Duga are those of workers of an alcohol manufacturing company named Sikkim Distilleries residing in the area.

They have also demanded proper sanitisation in the village, deployment of police and healthcare services, ambulances and to declare the area as a containment zone.

One of the cases from Singtam is that of an electrician working at the Singtam District Hospital, which has put patients and employees working there at risk of contracting the disease. Contact tracing of all those people who came in touch with him is underway.

All the newly positively tested patients from Rangpo and Chanatar have been taken to quarantine centres at the Himalayan Pharmacy Boy’s Hostel in the East Sikkim district, while patients from Mamring have been shifted to the Sikkim State Cooperative Union for treatment.

With this, the total number of positive cases has risen to 420 with 319 active cases and 112 discharged.

The Sikkim cabinet had recently decided to go for a complete shut down for about a week from 21st till 27th of July following the rising trends in the number of positive cases.

As cases show an alarming rise in the state which contracted the virus last, the extent to which the only one COVID19 hospital of Sikkim, the STNM hospital will be able to contribute in fighting the disease and provide the proper infrastructure required, remains a matter of concern, as the government has not yet decided upon another COVID hospital in the state.
