Assam Rifles seized Myanmarese Areca Nuts worth Rs 2 crore in Nagaland, police seized drugs worth over Rs 2.50 crore in Manipur’s Moreh

Guwahati, July 11: Troops of Assam Rifles seized Myanmarese Areca Nuts at Padam Pukhuri area in Nagaland’s Dimapur on Friday.

Based on specific information about a consignment of contraband, troops of Assam Rifles launched an operation at Padam Pukhuri area and recovered 1040 bags of contraband (Myanmarese Areca Nuts) amounting to Rs 2 crore.

Later, the seized contraband was handed over to Custom Preventive Division Officials, Dimapur.

On the other hand, police had seized contraband drugs worth over Rs 2.50 crore in Manipur’s Moreh area along the Indo-Myanmar border.

Police had also arrested three drug peddlers.

According to the reports, based on intelligence input, Moreh police and Commando had launched an operation in Moreh area along Indo-Myanmar border on Friday evening and arrested a person named Barul Alam and recovered 50,200 pieces of WY tablets and 11 grams of heroin powder in possession from him.

Security personnel had arrested the person while he was travelling from Moreh towards in a private vehicle.

Later police had arrested two more drug peddlers and they were identified as Sangkim Hmar and V Rajashekhar.

A case was registered at Moreh police station.

Tengnoupal district Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikramjit Singh said that Moreh police have seized WY tablets worth over Rs 7.75 crore, brown sugar worth over Rs 25.97 crore and heroin worth over Rs 4.60 lakh in June and ongoing July month in Moreh area so far.

Guwahati, July 11: Eight more persons died in Assam due to COVID-19 in last 24 hours taking the death tally in the state to 35.

According to the reports, all eight COVID-19 patients died in Guwahati.

While seven patients died due to the deadly virus at Guwahati Medical College Hospital, one died at COVID care canter set up at IIT, Guwahati.

On the other hand, Assam lost its first policeman to the novel Coronavirus.

53-year-old Hareswar Nath of the Assam Police’s 16 IR Battalion died on Friday due to COVID-19.

The police personnel tested positive for the new virus on July 7 and he was admitted at COVID care centre set up at IIT, Guwahati.

Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that – “With a heavy heart I inform you that Shri Hareswar Nath, 53 years old, a non-symptomatic patient with no comorbidities succumbed to COVID 19 at IITG COVID care centre. His oxygen levels plummeted to 90 within hours and he collapsed.”

More than 400 police personnel in the state have tested positive for COVID-19.

On the other hand, Assam has reported 936 new positive cases for COVID-19 in last 24 hours and with the new cases, the state tally has now increased to 15536.

Out of the fresh cases, 521 cases have been registered in Guwahati city alone.

Guwahati, July 10: An idol of Lord Shiva was allegedly broken by miscreants at a temple in Assam Karimganj district.

The incident took place at Jahanpur Longai area in Karimganj district.

According to the reports, some local villagers on Thursday night had noticed the incident and the villagers immediately informed police.

A local villager said that some miscreants had broken the idol by aiming to create unrest environment in the society.

“We appeal the police and district administration to arrest the culprits immediately,” the local villager said.

Police has started investigation to find out the actual truth.

Meanwhile the Karimganj district administration has appealed all sections of people to maintain peace.

Assam Baghjan OIL gas well fire still continues

Assam Baghjan gas well fire continues, tense over rehabilitation, compensation package, affected villagers threaten to self-immolate

Guwahati, July 10: It has been nearly a month since a gas well of Oil India Limited at Baghjan area in Assam Tinsukia district caught fire, and it continues to blaze.

Despite all efforts to control the fire, the Oil India Limited and the foreign experts have not been to control the situation so far.

A massive fire took place in the gas well of Baghjan oil field on June 9 and the incident occurred at a time when the experts and engineers of Oil India Limited were engaged to control the gas and oil emission continued at the site after the blowout of a gas well in the oil field managed by Oil India Limited on May 27.

Two firefighters had lost their lives in the fire.

A massive fire engulfed the entire Baghjan area causing damages of properties of local villagers.

Nearly 9000 people were shifted to relief camps following the incident.

On the other hand, protests are continued in Assam at Baghjan area and the affected villagers have demanded the Oil India Limited and district administration to fulfil their demands including providing compensations and rehabilitation package.

A local villager of Baghjan area said that the 15-day deadline to accept our 13-charter demands submitted to Oil India Limited has already ended, but the authorities have not taken it seriously.

“Thousands of people are still at relief camps and the situation is yet to control. The Oil India Limited had earlier said that the fire to be doused by July 7 and later it extended to July 10-11. They again said that it will take 10-15 days more to douse the fire. We don’t know when it will be controlled. We are facing lot of problems. It is now uncertain that, when the situation will come normal,” the local villager said.

The villagers have also threatened to self-immolate if their demands will not fulfil immediately.

On the other hand, Oil India Limited said that, environmental Impact Assessment by M/s ERM: Air quality monitoring was carried out in both Baghjan and Guijan sides, while noise level monitoring was carried out in Baghjan side yesterday.

“The team from M/s ERM also had carried out consultation with fisherman in Maguri Beel area and ecological survey in Maguri Grassland area yesterday. M/s ERM’s study will be continued till one week beyond the date of capping the well successfully. Sample collection for monitoring of air quality and noise level is in progress for analysis. Collected samples have been despatched for analysis by TERI. Debris clearance as a part of site preparation for bioremediation job is being carried out along the roadside from the blow out well towards Maguri Beel. Recording is in progress for seismological study in the vicinity of Baghjan-5 well. Because of continuous rain and movement of heavy vehicles, condition of the approach road to good plinth keeps deteriorating. Despite deterioration, the progress of debris removal is continuing. Efforts are on constantly to repair the bad patches of the road. Preparations are on for debris removal from the well plinth as reported this morning,” Oil India Limited said in its press release.

The Oil India Limited also said that surveys for Assessment of damage for compensation by the committee constituted by district administration are in progress and damage assessment for 517 families completed in Doomdooma Circle and 598 families in Tinsukia Circle July 8 and the total number of families assessed till July 8 is 1115.

“Blockade continues at Baghjan EPS since July 7 and it severely affecting OIL’s oil & gas production, which is a matter of serious concern for OIL. Since the time of safe movement of affected villagers to relief camps, OIL has been continuously taking utmost efforts to provide all relief and rehabilitation facilities to all people evacuated and has also released compensation amount of Rs 4.83 crore as an immediate relief on June 11 and the second tranche of Rs 4.17 crore remitted on July 8,” Oil India Limited said.

On the other hand, OIL has faced a production loss of 9956 MT Crude oil, 14.37 MMSCM of natural gas due to bandhs, stoppage, blockades since May 27.

Guwahati, July 10: With 568 new cases, Assam COVID-19 toll surges to 14600, with 13 death in the last 72 hours. The 568 fresh positive cases for COVID-19 have been reported in the last 24 hours.

Five more COVID-19 patients died in Assam in the last 24 hours taking the death toll due to the deadly virus to 27.

Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that four COVID-19 patients died at Guwahati Medical College Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in Guwahati and another patient died at Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh.

“A 72-year-old COVID-19 patients with lymphoma died at AMCH, a 68-year-old patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a 38-year-old patient with diabetes died at MMCH. A 70-year-old COVID-19 patient from Beltola area in Guwahati and a 56-year-old government officer from Karbi Anglong admitted in GMCH COVID ICU succumbed to their critical infections,” the Assam Health minister said.

In the last 72 hours, 13 persons died in the state due to the novel Coronavirus.

On the other hand, with 568 new COVID-19 positive cases the state tally has now surged to 14600.

Out of the new cases, 355 cases have been reported from Guwahati city alone.

Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted – “568 new #COVID19 patients recorded in Assam today, with 355 patients from Guwahati City alone. I advise Ghy people not to panic & take proper care. Total cases 14600, Recovered 9147, Active cases 5423, Deaths 27.”

On the other hand, 402 police personnel of the state have tested positive for COVID-19 till July 9.

Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) GP Singh tweeted – “July 9th 2020 – @assampolice 402 personnel have tested positive for Covid-19 till date out of whom 116 have recovered. All others are stable.”

Guwahati, July 9: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday said that Development works not to be stalled with the excuse of COVID-19 and had held a video conference at Brahmaputra State Guest House with the Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Joint Directors of Health Services (Jt. DHS) of all districts and took stock of the COVID-19 scenario, flood and erosion along with the status of implementation of various developmental schemes.

Emphasizing the need for continuing economic activities in parallel to the fight against COVID-19 and other natural calamities like flood and erosion, the Assam Chief Minister directed the district administrations to ensure non-interruption in the implementation of developmental schemes with the excuse of the fight against COVID-19.

Saying that there should not be any discrimination against the people residing in the COVID-19 hotspots, Sonowal stressed on the need for the district administration officials to consult with the respective public representatives of their districts before taking any measure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also directed the Jt. DHS of all the districts to ensure the patient suffering from other ailments, apart from COVID-19, get the required medical facilities on time.

Sonowal instructed the SPs to prevent mass gathering in their districts which might increase the risk of rapid transmission of coronavirus.

Directing the DCs to take steps for skill mapping of the returning Assam’s youths from outside the state so that they could be provided adequate employment opportunities, Sonowal instructed for engaging some of those returnees in the implementation of schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission while also providing self-employment opportunities through Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Assam Chief Minister also appreciated the sacrifices made by grassroots level workers of various government departments in this fight against COVID-19 and he said the people and the government must work together to defeat this global pandemic as the campaign has entered into a very critical phase.

He also instructed the DCs to plant trees to increase the forest cover in the state along with taking steps for making heritage sites encroachment free. He directed for expediting the work to provide land pattas to 54 thousand indigenous people by November.

Appreciating the administrations, police and forest departments of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Karbi Anglong districts for successfully curbing the menace of rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park, Sonowal called for such sustained efforts to preserve the flora and fauna of the state in the future as well.

Media Adviser to Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Legal Adviser to Chief Minister Shantanu Bharali, Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna, DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia and Principal Secretary of Health Department Sameer Kumar Sinha were also present in the video conference.
