Coronavirus lockdown: 391 Assam students finally reached in Guwahati from Kota

Guwahati, April 27: After a long journey 391 students from Assam who were stranded in Rajasthan’s Kota had finally reached in Guwahati early on Monday morning.

Amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the students had reached at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati early on Monday morning who started their journey from Kota in 17 buses on April 24.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and state junior health minister Pijush Hazarika had received them at Sarusajai stadium at around 3 am.

Interacting with the students, Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma told the students about the norms of 14-day mandatory quarantine which they need to observe now after a long journey back to Assam from Kota, Rajasthan.

The Assam Health minister also said that, the state health department will conduct swab tests of the students.

It is to be mentioned that, the Assam government on April 23 had air-dropped eight police officers to Kota to facilitate the return trip of the stranded students of Assam.

The eight police officers who accompanied the students were also sent to 14-day mandatory quarantine.

Army-police arrested two NSCN (IM) cadres with arms in Assam:

Guwahati, April 26: 2 cadres with arms arrested by Army-police in Assam. Indian army and police had apprehended two hardcore cadres of NSCN (IM) in Assam and recovered arms and ammunition.

Troops of the Indian army in a joint operation with Assam police apprehended a cadre of NSCN (IM) near the Lalpahara area in Tinsukia district.

Guwahati based Defence PRO Lt Col P Khongsai said that, based on a specific input, the joint team launched a search operation in the area on Friday evening and during the operation, the troops apprehended one NSCN (IM) cadre.

The 2 cadres with arms arrested by Army-police in Assam were identified as Raju Bramo hailing from the Golaghat district of Assam.

During the operation, the troops also recovered one point 22 pistol and four live rounds of ammunition in possession from him.

The apprehended cadre along with the recovered weapon was handed over to Lekhapani police station for further investigations.

Earlier in another operation, troops of the Indian army also apprehended a senior cadre of NSCN (IM) near Titabor in Jorhat district of Assam.

Based on a specific input, the troops launched a swift operation and established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post in the area and during checking of the vehicles, the troops apprehended one NSCN (IM) cadre who was trying to escape from the check post.

The apprehended cadre was identified as Nyaoba Konyak alias Nweypa hailing from Mon district of Nagaland.

Security personnel had recovered two USA made Beretta pistols with two magazines.

The apprehended NSCN (IM) cadre along with recovered weapons was handed over to Titabor police station for further investigations.

Guwahati, April 26: Assam Government puts efforts to help the elderly. Amid Coronavirus induced nationwide lockdown, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday visited Mothers Old Age Home and State Home for Women in Guwahati.

The Assam Chief Minister interacted with the inmates at both the places besides taking stock of their health condition and availability of food and medicines and also distributed nutritious food items and sanitizers for the inmates.

While visiting Mothers Old Age Home at Hatigaon area in the capital city of Assam, Sonowal said that the state government is also extending all possible support in successfully running the Home.

Further saying that the lockdown is being enforced to ensure good health and safety of the citizens, the Assam Chief Minister said that as elderly persons fall within the vulnerable category, there is a need to ensure regular health check-up for them besides providing nutritious food to boost their immunity.

He also informed that the state government is putting in its best efforts to provide help and support to the elderly and destitute and all departments of the government are working with ‘Team Assam’ spirit to defeat the scourge of novel coronavirus.

Sonowal during his visit to the State Home of Women at Jalukbari in the city, which is run by the Social Welfare Department, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi by declaring nationwide lockdown has allowed the people to keep themselves safe through maintaining social distancing.

He said that keeping this in view the Social Welfare Department has been directed to ensure the safety and well being of the inmates staying in different shelter homes across the State.

Stating that maintaining cleanliness in everyday life provides us an effective shield against the attack of any disease, the Assam Chief Minister urged the inmates to keep themselves aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 pandemic and remain fully cautious.

He informed them about the precautionary measures which are to be taken for self-protection against novel Coronavirus infection.

The Assam Chief Minister further said that daily exercise and yoga are very essential for maintaining a healthy mind and body and asked the Superintendent of the Women Home to adequately focus on extracurricular activities for the children inmates.

Coronavirus lockdown: Assam government extends inter-district travel to April 30

Guwahati, April 26: Assam government extends the inter-district travel for stranded people in different parts of the state amid COVID-19 lockdown to April 30.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that, the state government has decided to allow two-way travel for the stranded people with their vehicles till April 30 to facilitate the people to bring back their family members stranded in other places.

Earlier, the state government had allowed inter-district travel for the stranded people on April 25, 26, and 27.

“A total of 73,000 people who have own vehicle and stranded in different places in the state had applied for e-passes and the district Deputy Commissioners had provided e-passes for one way to 26,900 people. 34,559 people had applied for a round trip (two-way travel) and the Deputy Commissioner had rejected those applications. But, the state government has decided to allow round trip (two-way travel) for the stranded people till April 30,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

On the other hand, the state government has also allowed the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) to continue their services for facilitating the travel of the stranded people till April 30 amid the lockdown.

A total of 41,651 people who stranded in different places in the state had applied through 104 and the first day on April 25, the ASTC put 323 buses into service for facilitating the travel of around 5,000 registered passengers for short-distance journey in 18 districts.

To ensure social distancing, each ASTC bus carried 15-20 passengers within short distances only.

On Sunday, the ASTC has arranged 800 buses to transport 12,000 more people from different locations in the state.

27 COVID-19 patients discharged in Assam

27 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from Assam hospitals:

Guwahati, April 26: Assam has discharged 27 COVID-19 patients from different hospitals of the state so far.

On Sunday, eight patients were discharged from Golaghat Civil Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in Guwahati.

Assam has now 7 active positive cases for COVID-19 and all seven patients treatment is going on in hospitals.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that, the eight patients were discharged from two hospitals after their successive testes confirmed as negative.

“Assam has a positive case for COVID-19 load of 35 and one patient died during the period of hospitalization. We have already discharged 19 patients and today eight more patients have been discharged from hospital,”

The Assam minister also said that, the recovery and discharge rate in Assam is now 77 percent and the state has now left only seven positive cases for COVID-19.

On April 20, two COVID-19 patients were discharged from Sonapur Civil Hospital and Lakhimpur Civil Hospital.

Assam has so far tested 7616 swab samples and 209 test results are awaited.

The Assam Health minister also claimed that, the primary transmission has stopped in Assam and there is no report of community transmission in the state so far.

“We are finding positive cases from the facility quarantine centers as a result of secondary transmission,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He also said that, the state has now 2.70 lakh PPE kits, 52,000 N95 masks, and 46 lakh triple layer masks.

Coronavirus: Nagaland Tuensang District Administration held a meeting with Church leaders.

Guwahati, April 26: The Tuensang District Administration of Nagaland held a meeting with the Church leaders to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

District Administration of Tuensang district held a meeting with the Executive Secretaries of the Churches of four Tribes of Tuensang in connection with COVID-19 in the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner Tuensang under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kumar Ramnikant.

The DC expressed his appreciation to the CBLT for taking the initiative to sensitized and disseminate information on COVID-19 by visiting 42 Chang Villages.

To this end he urged the other executive Secretaries to replicate the same within their respective jurisprudence and also supplement government efforts while disseminating information. The Awareness Team to intensify awareness efforts by clearing the myths and imparting basic knowledge on Social Distancing Norms such as avoiding handshakes, spitting in public, washing hands, etc to every member of the village, he added.

DC encouraged the SHG/NGOs to stitch reusable masks for the villages as a measure to control the spread of the disease through improper disposal of single-use masks. Meeting discussed how to create an interactive team of people in every village as a knowledge pool and to address doubts of people regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

DC also stated the Inter-district movement after the lockdown period will result in the inward movement of people to the villages. It is to be ensured awareness to be given to the villages to avoid any social stigma associated with COVID-19 against the people entering the villages.

He also highlighted the recent ordinance approved by the center for the protection of healthcare workers under which rigorous fine and imprisonment will be imposed for violence and harassment against healthcare workers.

It should be ensured that no peer group farming is allowed, farmers are to strictly adhere to social /physical distancing norms, he also added. He advised villagers to be sensitized on the SOP for Corpse Management of COVID-19 dead body as per WHO and Ministry of Health and Family welfare, no stigmatization or discrimination should happen in any village concerning COVID-19 death.

Nagaland: Longleng District Task Force for COVID-19 meeting held

Guwahati, April 26: An immediate posting of an Anaesthesiologist at COVID-19 hospital, Longleng in Nagaland was discussed at length in a review meeting of the Longleng District Task Force on COVID-19 held at Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall.

The representatives of the NGOs and civil societies who are the co-opted members of the DTF expressed their displeasure with the department for not deploying an Anesthesiologist to the lone hospital and asserted that it was an injustice to the people of Longleng District.

They informed to take the matter to the Government for necessary action at the earliest.

Pichano Kikon, EAC Yachem presented a PowerPoint on the structure of the COVID-19 Incident Response System comprised of various sections, the roles and responsibilities of each section, and checklist for effective response to combat COVID-19.

Accordingly, the members discussed and deliberated on the requisition of vehicle and driver for transportation of COVID-19 corpse, identifying of burial and cemetery, safe disposal of COVID-19 corpse, men power and volunteers from NGOs and civil societies to assist the operation section, awareness program & directions to the village council, training for volunteers, mock drill on COVID-19 IRS system and detail action plan with relevant to Longleng District.

The CMO, Longleng also presented an Action plan prepared by the medical department, Longleng.

The Deputy Commissioner Longleng, who is also the chairman of the DTF, on COVID-19, chaired the meeting and appealed to all the members to be aware of their respective roles and responsibilities.

He urged the members to give suggestions relevant to the district to have a detailed action plan to combat COVID-19. He also appealed to the NGOs and churches to play a vital role and extend their support to the DTF.

The ADC Longleng D. Robin, the Commandant 12 NAP (IR) Chingtok, the Major Assam Rifle Longleng, the Executive Secretary PBCA Lempong Tialemba Phom, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Meren, Addl. SP Atopu Sumi and District Surveillance Officer Longleng spoke and shared their activities and suggestions.

Assam government bans on sale and distribution of pork meat after a mysterious virus kills 1900 pigs

Guwahati, April 26: Assam government has bans the sale and distribution of pork meat in the state following a mysterious virus that has killed over 1900 pigs in six districts of the state.

Assam government has imposed a ban on the sale of swine and consumption of their meat in the state.

Assam Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said that, many pigs have been died infected by a mysterious virus and a total of 1964 cases have been reported from six districts of the state so far.

“Our veterinary doctors have collected the samples from the dead pigs and sent the samples to Bhopal based National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) laboratory. We are now waiting for the report. But, our government has decided to impose a ban on sale and distribution of pork meat in the state with immediate effect,” Atul Bora said.

The Assam minister also said that, the affected areas have been declared as containment zones to check the spread of the virus.

The affected districts are – Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, and Jorhat.

On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a meeting with the top officials and scientists of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department at Brahmaputra State Guest House in Guwahati and directed the department to conduct an inquiry into the pig flu cases in the state and take remedial measures at the earliest in the greater interest of farmers engaged in the piggery sector.

Guwahati, April 26: Assam CM meets players of Assam Olympic Association. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that, because of COVID 19 pandemic and its repercussions in the field of sports, though several national and international sports events have been either postponed or canceled, sportspersons of Assam should continue their practices to keep them motivated even during the lockdown.

Chairing a meeting with the office-bearers of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) and some of the promising players at Brahmaputra State Guest House in Guwahati on Saturday, Sonowal sharing his words of wisdom asked the players of the state to remain focused and continue their practices to keep them in good stead.

“Like in most parts of the world, though the apocalypse in the form of novel coronavirus has had its impact in Assam as well, resulting in lockdown to contain and control the progression of the viral infection, the promising sportspersons should take the time to introspect their past performances and focus on their future with right kind of commitment and motivation,” Sonowal said.

The Assam Chief Minister also said that for a sportsperson, physical fitness is one of the most vital requirements to excel in his or her vocation. He, therefore, urged upon the players not to be bogged down by the pandemic and use the time to upkeep their physical fitness following all norms of social distancing.

Sonowal who is also the President of the Assam Olympic Association asked the office bearers of the Association to give the right kind of facilities to the players to help them keep their tempo going.

He said that during the lockdown period he took out his time to have a telephonic conversation with the office bearers of the sports associations at the district levels and asked them to keep themselves focused and help the players of their respective districts after the lockdown.

“State government would render all possible help to different sports bodies to enable them to follow their fixtures during the post lockdown period,” Sonowal said.

The office-bearers of AOA during the meeting expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having imposed the lockdown to fight against novel coronavirus.

They also said that they on their part along with the sportspersons did their best in creating awareness among the public to adhere to the norms of lockdown. The players also apprised the Chief Minister as to how they continued their practice keeping themselves inside and following the lockdown protocols.

Guwahati, April 25: Assam Police turned out to be a friend in need Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday hailed the action taken by Guwahati police to keep 3 people arriving from China in quarantine for 28 days in the last week of February, much before the COVID-19 pandemic took alarming proportions in the county.

Crediting the strict measures taken by Assam police for a successful observance of lockdown in the state, Sonowal reiterated the crucial role of police in the execution of relaxation of certain sectors during the 2nd phase of lockdown and he said that Assam police has turned out to be the friend in need for the people in distress through their dedicated and exemplary service.

“People of the state would remember this dedication till eternity and the faith of the people in the police would keep on motivating the police personnel to carry out their duties more vigorously in the future,” Sonowal said.

The Assam Chief Minister on Saturday held a review meeting of measures taken by Guwahati police in the fight against COVID-19 at police reserve in Guwahati.

Appreciating the steps taken by the city police to distribute foods to 5000 people daily in Guwahati with the help of NGOs, the Assam Chief Minister also interacted with Deputy Commissioners of Police and traffic police officials and asked about their difficulties and experiences while performing their duties.

Sonowal also called on the city police to keep a close watch on violation of law and order cases like theft and robbery, drug paddling etc. in railway stations, bus stands, parks etc.

He directed the police to get in touch with leading citizens of the society while urging them to create awareness among the people of the Muslim community to conduct Namaz rituals in their houses during the holy month of Ramadan.

Later talking to the newsmen in the Police Reserve premises, the Assam Chief Minister informed that the state government has taken steps for bringing back a total of 360 people, out of which 320 were students from Kota, Rajasthan by bus and the city police have taken adequate security measures in those quarantine areas where these returnees would be kept.

“Nearly 5000 people who were stuck in Guwahati due to the lockdown have been sent by 320 buses to their respective places and the police have played an important role in this as well,” Sonowal said.

The Assam Chief Minister stressed on the need to maintain social distancing during the three days when the state government has allowed inter-district movement of people.

Guwahati police have registered 83 cases and arrested 490 people for violation of lockdown, apart from seizing of 9106 vehicles and levying a total of Rs 57,19,100 as fines.
