Assam releases Rs 2000 each to 86,000 people from the state stranded outside:

Guwahati, April 20: Assam releases Rs.2000 each to people stranded. Assam government on Monday has deposited Rs 2000 each to the bank accounts of 86,000 people from Assam (mostly migrant workers), who are stranded outside of the state due to ongoing nationwide lockdown.

Assam releases Rs.2000 each to people stranded is the first set of financial assistance under Assam Cares to the people of Assam stranded outside of the state.

Addressing a press conference held in Guwahati Assam Health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, over 4.32 lakh people from the state are stranded outside of the state due to lockdown and the Assam government has decided to provide financial assistance to those people.

“Today, we have deposited Rs 2000 each to the bank accounts of 86,000 people and we will provide similar financial assistance to other people also. The decision was taken by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while he visited the office of NHM, Assam to review the current situation yesterday,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He further said that, it is the first installment and the second installment will be released before the lockdown is lifted.

The Assam Health minister also said that, Assam will conduct rapid testing for COVID-19 from April 22.

“Assam has received around 10,000 rapid testing kits from the ICMR and the state government is also in the process of procuring another 50,000 kits. We may require more,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Assam will not use 50,000 Chinese PPE kits, for now, around 1.5 lakh kits still available in the state:

Guwahati, April 20: Assam will not use Chinese PPE kits for now. Amid a controversy over the Chinese Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, the Assam government has decided to not use the 50,000 PPE kits for now which were imported from China.

On April 15, a cargo plane carrying 50,000 PPE kits from Guangzhou in China had landed at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and Assam Health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had received the consignment.

After controversy has been raised over the quality of the Chinese PPE kits, the Assam Health minister said that, the Assam government has requested the private party who brought the PPE kits from China to keep it in their stores in Guwahati.

“Assam government will only use the PPE kits after the doctors are satisfied with their quality. When the Assam government had ordered the PPE kits at that time the state had only around 2000-2200 PPE kits and after that the state had procured 1,50,000 PPE kits from various states of the country. As of now, we have enough PPE kits,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

According to the Assam Health department, around 23,591 PPE kits are stored at State Central Drugs Ware House, Narengi in Guwahati, 21,991 are in district hospitals.

The Assam minister also rubbished reports the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of rejecting Chinese PPE kits and said that, the DRDO never stated that they rejected Chinese PPE kits.

“It said that, it only tested and testing and rejection are two different things. The state government had not released any money against the consignment and the kits will be tested at DRDO or any other government laboratories,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He also said that, the center had also provided 5400 PPE kits to the state and as of now the state has enough stock of kits to fight COVID-19.

Assam has reported 34 COVID-19 positive cases and 18 patients were discharged from the hospitals so far.

One COVID-19 patient from Hailakandi district died on April 10.

Guwahati, April 20: Villagers in Assam struggling for survival. The people of many villages of Assam’s Karimganj district who are living in no man’s land along Indo-Bangladesh border are struggling for survival amid lockdown.

No food left at home or no medical assistance, over 70 families of three villages are facing many difficulties during the nationwide ongoing lockdown.

These villagers in Assam struggling for survival are trapped in no man’s land as the Indo-Bangladesh border fencing was constructed at a distance of 150 feet from the international border.

The Border Security Force (BSF) had sealed the international border when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown.

Earlier, the villagers came to the Krimganj side of Assam to purchase essential commodities and to farm in their lands.

But, they have been lockdown in their villages after the international border was completely sealed.

They are facing food scarcity, monetary problems also.

The BSF personnel deployed along the international border have provided drinking water facilities and some foods among the villagers, but it was not sufficient.

Halim Ali – a resident of Lafashail village trapped in no man’s land said that, the villagers are facing a lot of problems.

“We have now no food. The authorities have not allowed us to go outside to purchase any food items. We are facing many difficulties,” Halim Ali said.

Many other villagers of Cachar, Dhubri, Karimganj district of Assam are living in no man’s land and are facing similar problems due to COVID-19 lockdown.

Assam has registered 34 positive cases for COVID-19 so far and one among the COVID-19 patients was died due to the dreaded virus.

A total of 18 COVID-19 patients were discharged from different hospitals in the state so far.

18 COVID-19 patients discharged from Assam hospitals:

Guwahati, April 20: One more COVID-19 patient discharged in Assam. Assam has discharged 18 COVID-19 patients from different hospitals of the state so far.

On Monday, one patient was discharged from Sonapur Civil Hospital.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, the patients were discharged from the hospitals after their successive testes confirmed as negative.

“One #COVID19 patient – Hazrat Ali has been discharged today from Sonapur Civil Hospital, after his two successive tests confirmed as negative. Cured patients -18,” Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

On Sunday, five COVID-19 patients were from two government-run hospitals in Guwahati and today One more COVID-19 patient got discharged in Assam.

Assam has reported 34 positive cases for COVID-19 and one among the patients was died due to the dreaded virus on April 10.

On the other hand, two North Eastern states Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur have become Corona free states after three patients including two from Manipur recovered.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted – “I am glad to share that Manipur is now Corona free. Both patients have fully recovered and have tested negative. There are no fresh cases of the virus in the state. This has been possible because of the cooperation of public &medical staff and strict enforcement of lockdown.”

The North-Eastern region has registered 52 positive cases for COVID-19 so far and one each patient from Assam and Meghalaya died due to the dreaded virus.

Guwahati, April 19: Lockdown festival in Nagaland and Arunachal. When the nationwide lockdown is continued in the country to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, this lockdown has now become a festival or celebration for some people who have killed wild animals for feasting.

Several shocking incidents have come to light in the North-Eastern region where many people have killed king cobra, deer and several other endangered wild animals for feasting during the lockdown period.

Some videos of this lockdown feasting went viral on social media also.

In a video from Nagaland, some youths were seen as preparing roasted feast of many endangered wild animals.

In the video, few youths of Nagaland were seen displaying wild animals like deer, wild cat and other endangered wild animals they killed to feast in the jungle area.

One youth said in the video that – “We are celebrating lockdown festival.”

The youths were seen roasting parts of deer meat, fish and some other wild animal meat in a jungle area where the youth had laid camp.

In another video, three people of Arunachal Pradesh had killed a king cobra for a feast and displayed it publically.

The people said in the video that, they killed the king cobra in the jungle area and are carrying it for a feast.

One among the three people was heard saying in the video that, they did not have any rice left due to lockdown and so they killed snake to eat.

Arunachal Pradesh is a home of many endangered snake species and recently a group of researcher discovered a bright green pit viper named it Salazar’s pit viper, that name was inspired by Salazar Slytherin, the co-founder of J K Rowlings’ fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the jungle of the bordering state with China.

16 arrested for illegaly entering in Manipur

Manipur police arrested 16 persons who illegally entered from Mizoram amid lockdown:

Guwahati, April 19: 16 arrested for illegaly entering in Manipur. Manipur police had arrested 16 persons including 6 women and one minor child who stealthily entered across Barak river in Jiribam district on Saturday night amid the Coronavirus lockdown.

According to the reports, a police patrol team of Borobekra police station had intercepted the persons and on verification they all are of Kaishem punjee village under Borobekra subdivision and they came from Saifai of Mizoram on foot in the night without any authority during the lockdown and curfew hours.

A police official of Jiribam district said that they were arrested and an FIR is initiated against them under FIR No 1(4)2020 under section 188/269/34 of IPC with section 51( b) of Disaster Management Act.

The 16 arrested for illegaly entering in Manipur, were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Jiribam to remand into judicial custody.
The court released them on bail with an order to remain under home quarantine for 14 days.

Jiribam district police also informed them to maintain the protocols during the home quarantine period and also appealed to all the general public in the district to stay home and safe so that no such legal consequences will be faced.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday made telephone calls to several eminent personalities of the State and enquired about their well-being amidst the lockdown.

Sonowal talked over phone with noted linguist and researcher of folklore of Assam Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta, former Director General of Assam Police Nishinath Changkakoti, Eminent scientist and educationist Dr Kulendu Pathak, Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha Kamalakanta Gogoi, former Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha Bhaben Deka, writer Dr. Bimal Phukan, noted children’s litterateur Gagan Adhikari, Ex DIG of Assam Police Hiranya Bhatta among others.

Saying that Assam was performing well till now in managing COVID-19 outbreak, the Assam Chief Minister assured these personalities that State Government was fully prepared to tackle all eventualities in future.

Apart from them, the Sonowal also talked to eminent musicians of the state Zubeen Garg and Angaraag Mahanta (Papon) and wished them good health.

Five more COVID-19 patients discharged from Assam hospitals

Guwahati, April 19: Assam on Sunday had discharged five more COVID-19 patients from two government-run hospitals in Guwahati.

A total of 17 COVID-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the state so far.

Assam has reported 34 positive cases for COVID-19 and one among the patients was died due to the dreaded virus on April 10.

On Sunday, four COVID-19 patients were discharged from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) and one patient from Guwahati Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in the presence of Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, junior health minister Pijush Hazarika and other government officials.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, in coming a week, few COVID-19 patients will be discharged from the hospitals and the active COVID-19 cases will come down to a single digit.

He further said that, the patients were discharged from the hospitals after their 3-4 successive tests came as negative.

“Today, Assam has discharged five patients from hospitals. Altogether we have 34 COVID-19 patients and unfortunately one patient expired while taking treatment at Silchar Medical College Hospital. With today’s discharge, the total number of discharge patients is 17. So, live patients in our hospitals are 16 now. In the next one week we will able to discharge more patient and it will come down to single-digit soon,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Earlier, 12 other COVID-19 patients were discharged from Sonapur COVID-19 hospital, Goalpara civil hospital, Golaghat civil hospital, Silchar Medical College Hospital and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital.

Four held for physical assault of some non-locals in Nagaland:

Guwahati, April 19: Four arrested for physical assault in Nagaland. Dimapur Police on Sunday had arrested four persons for physical assault of some non-locals and circulation of a video clip recording the same incident that took place at Vidima village in Nagaland.

The arrested persons were identified as Valen Sote, Medovi Kiso, Thejasekho Sirie and Vilakhotuo Vizo.

A top official of Dimapur police said that, a case has been registered at Dimapur Sub Urban police station for further investigation.

Police urged the public to exercise caution while posting pictures/videos on various social media platforms and informed that stringent action will be taken against any such defaulter as per the relevant section of the IPC and Information Technology Act.

75-year-old injured woman forced to walk 23 km

Coronavirus lockdown: 75-year-old injured woman forced to walk 23 km after hospital authority allegedly refused to help her:

Guwahati, April 19: A 75-year-old injured woman was forced to walk about 23 km after the authorities of a government-run hospital and local police had allegedly refused to help the lady amid the Coronavirus lockdown.

This incident happened in Assam’s Jorhat district, where 75-year-old Kadami Googi and her daughter-in-law hailing from Sivasagar district were forced to walk 23 kms from Jorhat Medical College Hospital on the way to their home.

According to the reports, the older lady was referred to Jorhat Medical College Hospital by the doctor from Sivasagar after she suffered an elbow injury.

The lady and her daughter-in-law had reached Jorhat Medical College Hospital from Sivasagar by traveling in a 108 ambulance.

But the hospital authorities had allegedly refused to let her stay in the government-run hospital after quick check-up.

The daughter-in-law of the older lady said that, the local police had also refused to help them.

“She (older lady) fell from the bed and suffered an elbow injury and immediately admitted her at Sivasagar civil hospital and the doctors referred her to Jorhat Medical College Hospital in a 108 ambulance. After reaching at Jorhat Medical College Hospital, the doctors conducted some examinations and x-ray and told us to leave the hospital. We had no option and went to a nearby police station to seek help. But they (police) also refused to help us. Later, we had decided to walk from there to reach our home,” the daughter-in-law of the 75-year-old lady said.

Later, some locals of the Kakojan area in Jorhat district – located about 23 km away from Jorhat Medical College Hospital, found the injured lady and arranged a vehicle for them to Sivasagar.
