NIA files charge sheet against two Bangladeshis in connection with Ansar-al-Islam

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday had filed charge sheet against two Bangladeshi nationals in connection with a terror related case of Ansar-al-Islam.

In connection with the case number RC-11/ 2019/NIA-GUW (Ansar-al-Islam case), the premier investigation agency had filed charge sheet against two Bangladeshi accused Mahmud Hassan alias Shariful Islam and Mohamad Sa’ad Hussain alias Mohamad Sayad Hussain alias Shohan Molla alias Shihab Hossainin the NIA special court at Aizwal in Mizoram.

The case was re-registered by NIA on September 17, 2019 which had arisen out of FIR number 07/2019 dated 29.07.2019 of Marpara police station under Mamit district of Mizoram.

According to the reports, two suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained by the villagers of Silsuri when they could not produce the valid documents and gave unsatisfactory reply to the queries about their antecedents and purpose of presence in the area.

They were later handed over to the BSF personnel of Silsuri Border Out-Post (BOP) who in turn handed over the two accused to Marpara police station.

The local police registered the case for investigation which was later handed over to NIA.

During investigation, NIA established the identity of the accused as 25-year-old Mahmud Hassan alias Shariful Islam of Barherchar village in Narsingdi, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh and 31-year-old Mohamad Sa’ad Hussain alias Mohamad Sayad Hussain alias  Shohan Molla alias Shihab Hossain of Doharpar village in Magura, Division Khulna, Bangladesh.

The premier investigation agency has also established that both the accused are members of Ansar-al-Islam, a banned terrorist organization in Bangladesh.

Both the accused crossed the international border of India and Bangladesh illegally in the State of Tripura in November, 2018.

They concealed their location and identity based on fake Aadhaar cards and the fake Aadhaar cards were given to them by their handlers in Bangladesh.

Investigation further revealed that accused Mahmud Hassan alias Shariful Islam had travelled from Agartala to Bangalore in pursuance to conspiracy of terrorist acts in India and stayed in Bangalore for eight to nine months (November, 2018 to July, 2019).

During his stay in Bangalore, he conducted reccee of some public places in Bangalore. Investigation has also revealed that on instructions of his handler, the accused financially assisted another arrested ABT (Ansarullah Bangla Team) member lodged in Kolkata jail.

ABT is another banned terrorist organization in Bangladesh. Both the accused later criminally conspired, as per directions of their handlers in Bangladesh and tried to procure weapons from various places in the State of Tripura and Mizoram in pursuance of the conspiracy of committing terrorist acts in India.

During investigation, large amount of incriminating documents were recovered from their seized digital devices.

Further investigation is going on.

National Liberation Front of Bengali (NLFB) – a militant group based in Assam especially in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) was formed a decade ago by aiming to give security, safeguard to the Bengali community people in the state.

38-year-old Kamal Paul – hailing from Kokrajhar district under BTAD is the C-in-C of National Liberation Front of Bengali (NLFB) had formed the outfit.

On Thursday, Kamal Paul along with 300 other cadres of the militant group had surrendered with their arms in front of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati on Thursday.

The entire cadres of the outfit have now come back in the mainstream.

According to Kamal Paul, the Bengali community people in Assam especially in the BTAD area have faced several problems including their citizenship rights, tortured by other militant groups in past several decades.

“Several Bengali community people are still lodged in the detention camps in Assam and they are facing lot of problems to prove their citizenship. Apart from it, some other militant groups had tortured our Bengali community people in many places in the state. Many Bengali people were killed, kidnapped in many places. They were served extortion letters, getting life threatening etc. To give security, safeguard our people, we had decided to form a new militant organization and the NLFB was formed on December 31, 2010,” Kamal Paul said.

The C-in-C of NLFB said that, they main headquarter was located in Kokrajhar district.

“Our demands including safety and security are now seem to be fulfilled and the present government has almost fulfilled our demands. The detention camp issue may be settled after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act came into effect and for this, we are surrendered. The Hindu Bengalis must to give citizenship,” Kamal Paul said.

On the other hand, Ajit Biswas – a cadre of NLFB and hailing from Baksa district said that, he had joined the organization in 2011 and taken arms training in Bhutan.

“I had joined the organization to provide safety and security to our Bengali community people and finally we get it and the government has also taken initiative. We have come here to surrender,” Ajit Biswas said.

24-year-old Pranab Jyoti Bora – a youth from Assam’s Dhemaji district had joined banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independence) three years before and come back to the mainstream after realizing that, the demands raise by ULFA (I) will not fulfill.

“I joined ULFA (I) to see the situation of Assam. But later, I realize that, my path was wrong and decided to come back. I think that, the rest cadres of ULFA (I) should also come back to the mainstream. It is not possible what they want,” Pranab Jyoti Bora said.

Pranab, who took arms training in Myanmar and met several top leaders of ULFA (I) including Arunudoy Dohotia, Jiban Moran, Nayan Asom had also surrendered in Guwahati on Thursday along with 49 other cadres of the banned outfit.

On the other hand, 32-year-old Baburam Rabha who joined Rava National Liberation Front (RNLF) in 2009 had also surrendered along with 12 other cadres of RNLF in Guwahati on Thursday.

“I joined the organization to work for our Rabha community. Later we realize that, our decisions are wrong and come here to surrender,” Baburam Rabha said.

A total of 644 insurgents of eight different militant groups had surrendered with their arms in Guwahati on Thursday in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the Assam Chief Minister assured them that, the government will provide all supports to them under the government policies, schemes.

Two killed, 30 injured in a road mishap in Assam’s Goalpara district

At least two people were killed and 30 others injured when a passenger vehicle met with an accident in Assam’s Goalpara district on Friday morning.

The incident took place at Rongjuli area in Goalpara district when a Traveller vehicle bearing registration number AS-02BC-9954 hit a roadside tree on National Highway 17.

Two people died on spot and 30 others were injured in the accident.

The injured persons were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The deceased persons were identified as Matibur Rahman and Habibur Rahman.

According to the reports, the people hailing from Juria area in Nagaon district were coming from Jaleswar area in Barpeta district after participating in a religious function

644 insurgents of eight militant groups surrendered in Guwahati

A total of 644 militants of eight different militant groups of the state on Thursday surrendered with their arms.

In a function held at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) auditorium in Guwahati, the insurgents belonged to eight different outfits including United Liberation Front of Asom – Independence (ULFA-I), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Rava National Liberation Front (RNLF), National Liberation Front of Bengali (NLFB), Adivasi Dragon Fighter (ADF), National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA) and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-M) had laid down their arms before Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and other senior officials of Assam government, Assam police and Indian army were also present in the function.

The insurgents had deposited a total of 177 numbers of arms including AK series rifle, MQ rifle, 1686 rounds live ammunition, 52 grenades, 71 bombs, three rocket launcher cells, 58 magazines, 306 numbers of detonator, 1.93 kg explosives, two RT sets, 17 khukris.

A total of 301 militants of NLFB, 178 militants of ADF, 87 militants of NSLA, 50 militants of ULFA-I, 13 militants of RNLF, eight militants of NDFB, six from KLO and one of CPI-Maoist had surrendered with their arms.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that, those youths who strayed into terrorism and extremist activities must be given an opportunity to come back to the mainstream society and rebuild their lives.

“I welcome all members of extremist groups who have laid down their arms today to lead a normal life again and contribute meaningfully to the nation building process through hard work and dedication. It will inspire other such militant organisation members to come back to mainstream society,” Sonowal said.

Saying that building a terrorism-free Assam was one of the main commitments of the present state government, Chief Minister Sonowal urged the surrendered militants to dedicate themselves to the nation building process and utilise their potential to bring positive transformation in the society.

“Peace is a prerequisite for ushering in development and the former militants must contribute towards sustaining peace and harmony in the society,” Sonowal said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s example, the Assam Chief Minister said people from all sections of the society must emulate the Prime Minister’s dedication towards the objective of making India strong force at the international stage.

Following Prime Minister Modi led central government’s Act East Policy initiatives, the state government has been undertaking steps to make Guwahati the gateway to South East Asia and Assam’s farmers have been able to export their produce to the markets of Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Dubai etc., the Chief Minister said.

He also urged the surrendered militants to come forward and take advantage of this positive environment to establish themselves in the society through hardwork and dedication. The state government is always ready to help in their rehabilitation process, he said.

Saying that by deciding to give up arms the militant organisation members have shown their trust in the democratic process, Sonowal expressed optimism that this would encourage all law abiding citizens to keep believing in democratic values and it would inspire the younger generations to strengthen the democratic foundation of the country.

“Resolution of all problems is possible through discussion and people must keep their faith on the law of the land,” the Assam Chief Minister said.

Two minor boys of a family charred to death in Guwahati

Two minor boys of a family were died in a fire incident in Guwahati on Thursday.

The incident took place at Basisthapur area in the city.

The fire broke out at one Tushar Goswami’s house near the BSNL office.

According to the reports, two kids identified as 7-year-old Iban Goswami and his 4-year-old brother Ishan Goswami were died in the fire incident.

Locals also alleged that, the fire service personnel had reached the spot late for which the fire could not be doused on time.

When the fire tenders had reached the spot, fire caught the entire house.

Later, fire tenders had managed to control the situation.

The picturesque city of Guwahati bid an emotional goodbye to the Khelo India Youth Games on Wednesday, crowing Maharashtra the unconquered champions during a power-packed and entertaining closing ceremony.

The defending champions romped to a whopping 256 medals, including 78 gold and 77 silver medals to underline their pre-eminence in a multi-game event of this scale once more time.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister of State, Ministry of Food Processing Industries Rameshwar Teli, presented the trophy to the winners even as a packed stadium rose to its feet.

“I would like to congratulate all the participating teams from across states and everyone who has been part of this journey of making Khelo India Youth Games 2020 a mega success. Over the past 13 days the city  was on song, witnessing some scintillating sports action. There was a feeling of competitive spirit and sportsmanship amongst all contestants and at the end we saw Maharashtra winning the championship. The tournament is a big boost towards achieving our Honorable Prime Minister’s  Shri Narendra Modi’s long term vision of Fit India movement. I salute the hard work of all  athletes that participated in the games as they will be the ones who will go on to bring major sporting  laurels for our country globally,” Sonowal said.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju, Assam Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma were among the many dignitaries and local celebrities who graced the occasion.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju said that – “I congratulate all the athletes for their enthusiastic participation in Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati. Congratulations to Maharashtra for winning the champions trophy two years in a row.”

“I am confident  that from among this year’s winners will emerge our future champions who will represent India at international events and even at the Olympics, in the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. Our motto has been to provide the best facilities and a world class experience to athletes at the Khelo India Games. This is the platform from which they are starting their sporting journey, and with the right grooming they will  evolve into international sporting icons,” Rijiju said.

Immediately after the awards ceremony, Assam showcased their rich cultural heritage in a crisp and beautiful show, led by a Modern Creative Dance performance by Aimee Baruah, Directed by Asim.

Before a range of local performers hit the stage, Chinese Martial Artists wowed the audience with their speed, power and elegance. They were specially flown in to mark the 70th year of the India-China friendship.

Performances by Tarulata Kutum with Missing Dancers, Sajan Nayak with Jhumuir Dancers and a solo by Babita Sharma set the mood for the evening.

Popular Assamese singer Jitul Sonowal too charmed everybody with his mellifluous sings.

In between, Krishnamoni Chutiya performed the Bihu Song which was beautifully choreographed by Pankaj Engiti, to the delight of the local fans.

The evening was topped up by a live concert by Bollywood singing star Shaan.

The Bollywood singer got the audience, including the athletes, on their feet as he belted out a series of his hit numbers.

IED explosion rocks Manipur’s Imphal West district ahead of R-Day celebrations

Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, a powerful explosion rocked Manipur’s Imphal West district on Thursday.

A minor girl was injured in an explosion in Manipur Imphal West district on Thursday early morning.

According to the police, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was exploded  in front of a cloth shop at Lalambung Makong area on RIMS road at around 4-55 am.

Police suspected that, militants of banned outfit had triggered the explosion.

Following the explosion, top police official and other security personnel had rushed to the area and started investigation.

The injured girl was rushed to nearby hospital.

Security has been beefed up in the area and launched operation against the suspected militants.

Assam’s Shivangi, Maha’s Kenisha surge ahead with fifth gold medals

The unstoppable Shivangi Sarma stamped her signature on the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 here with a fifth freestyle swimming gold medal on Tuesday to emerge the most successful individual athlete. Kenisha Gupta was just as successful, who won her third gold to add to the two relay crowns that she anchored Maharashtra’s teams to victory.

Shivangi owned the pool, adding the 50m freestyle titles in a time of 27.43 seconds to the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle gold medals that she won over the last three days. Her decision to compete for Assam in this edition of the Games helped the hosts rise to the sixth place on the medals table ahead of formidable teams from Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

There was no difference in the top five, with Maharashtra holding a handsome lead over Haryana both in terms of gold and total medals won. Maharashtra’s 74 gold, 68 silver and 92 bronze gave the State a total of 234 medals, well past the 228 that their athletes won at home in Pune last year. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are placed above Assam.

Kenisha Gupta, a long-limbed 16-year-old Mumbaikar, held her own by winning the Under-17 50m race in a faster time despite a visibly slower start. She could claim bragging rights by clocking a faster time than the senior girl but the modest swimmer kept a low-profile despite winning five gold medals herself, letting Shivangi Sarma bask in the limelight.

Karnataka swimmer Srihari Nataraj’s loss to Mihir Ambre in the 50m freestyle final meant that he went out of the reckoning to garner five gold medals. Karnataka and Maharashtra swimmers will resume their own battle in the Dr. Zakir Hussain Aquatics Complex on the final day on Wednesday, with both teams having won 17 gold each.

Gujarat’s Mir Tasnim Irfan Ali beat favourite Unnati Bisht of Uttarakhand in three games in the girls under-21 singles final in the Deshbhakt Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium. Madhya Pradesh’s Sakshi Phogat took the under-17 gold with a 21-16, 23-21 victory over Riya Habbu (Maharashtra).

Amit Rathore (Madhya Pradesh) beat Sathish Kumar (Tamil Nadu) 21-18, 21-19 in the boys under- 21 final while Haryana’s Bharat Raghav defeated Shubham Patel (Rajasthan) 21-19, 21-19 in the under-17 title clash.

In an all-Haryana final in the boys under-17 singles tennis in which no quarter was asked, and none given, Gurgaon’s Chirag Duhan beat Rohtak’s Krishan Hooda 6-4, 7-5. With Krishan Hooda fighting all the way, those by the courtside at the All Assam Tennis Association Complex in Chachal were treated to a really long game that extended over 17 minutes.

The girls’ final was pretty one-sided with Vaidehi Chaudhari (Gujarat) beating Telangana’s Sathwika Sama who just was unable to find her rhythm. The Ahmedabad girl ran out a 6-3, 6-1 winner, playing smart, percentage tennis and applying pressure on her rival.

There was mixed luck for the Haryana under-21 hockey teams. The girls squad beating back Odisha’s challenge with a 5-3 win after Usha and Gagangdeep Kaur scored in the final quarter. The boys lost a heart-breaking shoot-out 1-3 after drawing goal-less with Uttar Pradesh.

In the first of the football finals, Mizoram’s M Lalpektluanha scored in the 37th minute to break Assam’s hearts and help his team win the boys under-17 gold.

Ambesori Devi (Manipur) was among the girls who climbed on top of the podium ahead of Haryana boxers.

Haryana boxers, expectedly, dominated the under-17 bouts, winning eight gold and a total of 26 but Maharashtra held their own by winning six gold to ensure that the gap in the overall tally was not bridged by much.
