Kolkata, April 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, alleging that it conspired to obstruct Ram Navami celebrations.

During a rally in Balurghat, West Bengal, Modi highlighted the significance of this Ram Navami, marking the first celebration since the enthronement of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. He accused the TMC of attempting to thwart the festivities through various schemes but emphasized that truth prevailed.

Modi acknowledged the Calcutta High Court’s decision granting permission for a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession on Ram Navami in Howrah city, subject to certain conditions to ensure a peaceful event.

The procession, requested by petitioners from Shibpur IIEST to Ramkrishnapur ferry ghat along the Hooghly River, received clearance from Justice Jay Sengupta.

The conditions included refraining from provocative slogans and maintaining a continuous movement during the procession.

The Mamata Banerjee-led government had cited unrest during the previous year’s procession, citing an ongoing NIA investigation.

In response, they proposed an alternative route, which the organizers contested, leading to the court petition.

Ram Navami celebrations have emerged as a contentious issue between the TMC and the BJP in West Bengal, often resulting in communal tensions and political clashes.

As the state gears up for the Lok Sabha elections across seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1, Ram Navami festivities add another layer to the political landscape. The outcome of this battle will be revealed on June 4, during the vote-counting process.
