Dibrugarh, Dec 18: Dibrugarh district administration has taken a decisive step to curb illegal coal mining activities at the Tarajan tea estate in the Naharkatia area of Assam.

Issuing an order under Section 144 of the Cr.P.C., the district administration highlighted the existence of a sensitive law and order situation due to the potential threat of illegal coal mining, leading to disturbances and jeopardizing the peace, tranquillity, and safety of life and property in the area.

The order, signed by the District Magistrate, imposes restrictions on various activities in the Dibrugarh district, emphasizing the need to address the risks associated with illegal coal mining at Tarajan Tea Estate.

The tea estate, situated approximately 5 kilometers northeast of the historical Tipam Hill, has become a focal point for concerns related to unauthorized coal extraction, specifically through rat-hole mining practices.

In exercising the powers conferred under Section 144 Cr.P.C., the District Magistrate extended a prohibitory order, building upon the earlier directive issued on September 23, 2023 (Order No. MJ/51/2022-MAG-DBR/128).

The specified area, Tarajan Tea Estate, falls within the jurisdiction of No. 5 FS Grant, Fakial Mouza, under Joypur Police Station in Naharkatia Revenue Circle, Dibrugarh.

The decision to impose the prohibitory order is rooted in the potential repercussions of illegal coal mining, including the foreseeable breach of law and order, disturbance of peace and tranquillity, and the risk of harm to life and property.

Violations of the imposed order are subject to legal consequences under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), reinforcing the seriousness with which the administration regards the issue.

By taking these measures, the Dibrugarh district administration aims to address and prevent the adverse effects of unauthorized coal mining, safeguarding the well-being and security of the local community and preserving the environmental and legal integrity of the region.
