New Delhi, Dec 18: Rajya Sabha suspended 45 Opposition members, including prominent Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, and KC Venugopal, due to their involvement in disrupting Parliament proceedings.

Among these, 34 members received suspensions for the remainder of the Winter session, while 11 MPs face suspension pending a report from the Privileges Committee.

The disruptions occurred as opposition parties, spearheaded by the Congress, continued their protests over the Parliament security breach, leading to the adjournment of Rajya Sabha proceedings three times on Monday.

The chaos unfolded in the Winter session, triggered by a security breach on December 13, the anniversary of the 2001 terror attack on Parliament.

Two individuals, identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, breached security by jumping from the visitors’ gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber and releasing colored gas canisters.

Similarly, the Lok Sabha also witnessed a crackdown, with 33 Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) suspended for causing disturbances in the House. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules, urging MPs to avoid turning the House into a “riot brigade” and to uphold its dignity.

The demand for a government statement on the security breach incident has been a key point of contention, with opposition members seeking accountability.

This wave of suspensions follows a previous move where 14 opposition members, including 13 from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha, faced suspensions for disrupting parliamentary proceedings.

The ongoing disruptions and consequent disciplinary actions highlight the tense atmosphere in the Indian Parliament during the current session.
