byProposed 48-hr bandh call by dam-affected villagers suspended in Manipur

Manipur, Dec 3: The proposed 48-hour bandh called along the Imphal to Ukhrul and Imphal to Kamjong roads in Manipur from 3rd – 4th December has been suspended following an assurance by the Manipur government for implementation of pending rehabilitation and resettlement of villagers affected by Mapithel dam.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Mapithel Dam Affected Headmen, Chiefs, and Elders Organisation (MDAHCEO) mentioned that the proposed bandh call has been withdrawn following the “good assurance by the state authorities for implementation of the memorandum of agreement on time”.

The organization had proposed the 48-hr bandh in protest against the failure of fulfilment of the agreement signed between them and the Manipur government.

The organization has been demanding that the state provide rehabilitation and resettlement packages to all households affected by the construction of Mapithel Dam (Thoubal Multipurpose Project).

According to the MDAHCEO, only 60% of the families affected by the project have been provided with economic livelihood rehabilitation packages so far.

A total of 23 villages, both downstream and upstream, have been affected by the project.
