Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Sept 22: The Women’s Reservation Bill, aimed at reserving 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, achieved unanimous approval in the Rajya Sabha on September 21, with no nays or abstentions.

The Bill passed with overwhelming support from all members of the House, garnering 215 votes in favor and none against it. In his concluding remarks on the Bill, officially known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “This bill will instill new confidence in the people of the country. It also reflects the positive outlook of all political parties, which will invigorate women’s empowerment.”

A day prior to this historic decision, the Lok Sabha paved the way for this landmark legislation by passing the women’s reservation Bill with near unanimity, receiving 454 votes in favor and only two against it from the AIMIM party. During the discussion on the Bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured the Lower House of a “transparent process” for identifying seats to be reserved for women.

Additionally, the Bill proposes to maintain this reservation for a 15-year period, with seats designated for women being rotated after each delimitation exercise.
