Guwahati, Sept 01: Assam’s relentless battle with flooding continues as more than four lakh people grapple with the ongoing deluge. According to an official bulletin, on August 31, the water levels in the Brahmaputra River surged in various areas, keeping the state’s flood situation dire.

Tragically, another life was claimed by the floods in Golaghat district, bringing this year’s flood-related death toll to 16. The bulletin, issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), reported that the Brahmaputra River was flowing above the danger mark at Dhubri, Goalpara, Guwahati, Tezpur, and Nematighat.

The number of people affected by the floods has surged to 4,03,313 across 19 districts, compared to the previous day’s count of 3,40,937 across 22 districts. Among the worst-hit districts are Darrang with 72,852 affected individuals, Nalbari with 72,427, Majuli with 61,238, Golaghat with 57,420, and Morigaon with 44,181.

Currently, 3,031 people have sought refuge in 125 relief camps, while authorities in affected districts are distributing relief materials through 116 distribution centers. In the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, floodwaters have inundated ten camps, as reported by the forest department.

A staggering total of 2,31,088 animals have been affected by the current wave of flooding, as outlined in the bulletin. Moreover, 25 roads have been damaged in Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Majuli, Morigaon, and Udalguri districts. Large-scale erosion has also been reported in districts including Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Majuli, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri.
