Agartala, Jan 25: The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is actively working towards the inauguration of the Sabroom land port in South Tripura, with plans to open the facility by February. Once operational, this land port will provide direct access to Bangladesh’s Ramgarh port, currently under construction.

LPAI Chairman Aditya Mishra visited the Sabroom land port construction site to review progress and expedite the work.

According to officials, approximately 95% of the cargo terminal at the Sabroom facility has been completed, and 80% of the work at the passenger terminal is also finished.

Emphasizing the importance of timely completion, Mishra discussed progress with a Bangladesh delegation led by Project Director Ramgarh Port, Sarwar Alam, during the visit.

The LPAI aims to initiate passenger movement through the Sabroom land port in February, considering that progress on cargo handling facilities on the Bangladesh side is not as advanced.

While passenger movement is targeted for February, cargo movement may take more time due to the ongoing development of facilities on the Bangladesh side at Ramgarh.

The Sabroom land port, with an allocated budget of Rs 232 crore, is designed to handle both cargo and passengers.

The initiation of passenger movement is a significant step, especially with the opening of Matri Setu, connecting both sides across the international border in 2021.

While cargo facilities are yet to be fully established on the Bangladesh side, efforts are underway to make passenger movement operational at the earliest.
